The Last Word in Navigation
The line of AVIC-Z products have long been considered the last word in navigation, and this year, the AVIC-Z120BT stays true to its Pioneer heritage with its high performance features. Out of the box, this system offers a comprehensive map database from Tele Atlas, covering the entire United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii, enabling users to route to millions of destinations including more than 12 million points of interest (POIs). The built-in Text-to-Speech engine clearly pronounces turn-by-turn direction and street names to ensure smooth travels.
The AVIC-Z120BT also offers a wide variety of map views tailored to different driving experiences. For example, "Rear View" allows you to watch your cargo in tow with your optional back-up camera while simultaneously being able to view the map. High-resolution 2D and 3D maps provide renderings of nearby landmarks and terrain to help you navigate the world around you. The Z's high-powered graphics processor and precision-guided GPS sensor deliver stunningly detailed mapping with amazing accuracy.
Pioneer's AVIC-Z120BT takes convenience to the next level with voice-activated navigation. You can simply input an address by voice or find a place to re-fuel by saying, "Find the nearest gas station" or "Find the nearest McDonalds"
Enjoy All Kinds of Media
Built to navigate, but born to entertain, the AVIC-Z120BT offers audio and video playback from the most popular formats. Whether you're watching DivX files on DVD, H.264 video on SD card or iTunes AAC files on CD, there are dozens of playback options for your favorite media. You will also appreciate the Z's ability to simultaneously entertain your front and back seat passengers with two different audio and video sources using Dual Zone functionality. You can also access your favorite Pandora stations through your iPhone.
Ditch the Headset With Built-in Bluetooth
Take incoming calls through the AVIC-Z120BT, and be heard clearly without a headset courtesy of Bluetooth technology. Connecting your compatible phone is easy and gives you instant touch screen access to your contacts. You can also dial a contact with the sound of your voice by simply saying "Call Jack Smith."
Your iPod (and iPhone) Will Thank You
On top of being an exceptional navigator, the AVIC-Z series delivers an iPod experience that blows away FM transmitters or cassette adaptors. Even at the first glance, you will fall in love with the easy-to-use touch screen controls for your music and brilliant 7-inch display for your videos. Album art is also beautifully displayed.
With the optional cable (CD-IU50V) connected to your iPod, you will notice how easily you can find songs, videos, artists, or playlists with a few simple taps of your finger. Pioneer has also created powerful searching tools such as Link Play and Alphabet Search to help you find content faster.
The AVIC-Z120BT also features voice-activated control of your iPod. Simply say the name of an artist, album, playlist, or genre to bring up the next song.
Customize and Colorize
This all-new AVIC-Z120BT features a revolutionary touch screen interface that let's you build your own home screen with the navigation, multi-media and Bluetooth functions that your use most. Simply drag and drop a function's icon in the menu to create up to 15 shortcuts within your home screen.
You can further customize the navigation receiver by adjusting button illumination color to match the interior of your car, or by uploading your own boot-up screen photo.
The Freedom of Speech
Navigation functions, iPod audio control and hands-free Bluetooth calling can all be controlled with the sound of your voice. Voice-activated control over your navigation system not only performs in-car tasks with greater speed, but helps you keep your eyes (and attention) on the road ahead.
MusicSphere
Pioneer's new MusicSphere for the AVIC-Z120BT allows you to easily create instant playlists from the music in your iTunes library. MusicSphere uses an advanced plug-in that works with iTunes to intelligently construct playlists from your massive music collection by analyzing attributes such as feeling (bright, energetic, gloomy, relaxing calm), rhythm pattern, Beats Per Minute (BPM), and more. Playlists are stored on your iPod or iPhone and accessed through the AVIC-Z120BT's MusicSphere interface.
ECO Features
For consumers, the system also features the second generation ECO Driving function with new features that provide driving status reports and the driver's impact on the environment with visual images on-screen. Through Pioneer's proprietary AVIC FEEDS PC software, the unit can estimate the fuel cost of trip routes as well as the vehicle's CO2 emissions through detailed Drive Reports. Through a proprietary fuel consumption algorithm, AVIC FEEDS can also log and archive driving data and analyze driving habits to generate various reports with suggestions to improve fuel efficiency.
ECO Graph
New to this generation of eco-conscious features, the ECO Graph feature provides a view in addition to 2D and 3D, which divides the map view screen with a new graph to provide drivers with a visual representation of their environmental impact. Additionally, when a route is set, the unit will calculate a Drive Score based on driving efficiency which factors abrupt stops and accelerations and idle time.
HD/SAT Radio Ready
The AVIC-Z120BT gives you plenty of room to expand your broadcast options. With optional tuners, experience the vast channel selection of XM Sirius Satellite Radio and HD Radio.

I use it mostly with my iPhone and listen to Pandora or iPod. So I don't know about the reported issues with HD Radio presets, etc. I could see how this can be a problem though since the radio presents will show the last song you listened to instead of the station number or call letters (huh?).
I could give an extensive list about the quirks with this unit, but IMO every unit with this many features would have it's flaws.
Before you purchase this unit, I would search the internet for some extensive lists of the usability issues. Since there are plenty out there, I don't see any reason to repeat them.
However, I was hoping when I purchased this head-unit that I would be able to use all the features that this product has to offer being wireless, i.e. through Bluetooth. Which is exactly what Pioneer's web page and all the documents I could find on this product implied. I was extremely disappointed when I went to sync my iPhone with the headunit and found that when I played my iPod (within my iPhone)I didn't have complete functionality through Bluetooth. I couldn't manage the songs on the headunit with just Bluetooth connectivity, as the video on-line implies by showing how you can seamlessly scroll through your songs directly on the head-unit. But never did any of the videos or product descriptions specifically advise that you needed additional equipment for full functionality. After doing further research I found the USB Interface Cable CD-IU50V that must be separately purchased for full control via the headunit interface. Once using the Cable everything works pristine. I am still disappointed that I can't go 100% wireless and have all the functionality. You can go 100% wireless, but if you want to find a song you have to go directly to your iPod or iPhone to find and change the song, artist or playlist. I also find I forget my iPhone sometimes now when I exit my car because I hid the cable and connection in my center console (I know that's my problem)! That is why I only rated 4 stars.
If only Pioneer actually cared about their customers, I might be inclined to give this at least a 4 star rating. The unit worked great for exactly 13 months. Then the bluetooth stopped working inexplicably. Rest of the device worked fine, but now it would seem the BT chip has died. To get it fixed, I need to mail Pioneer my stereo on my own dime, pay them $230, wait 3 weeks to hopefully get the issue resolved. I called 3 separate times just to confirm that there were no other options. I understand how warranties are supposed to work, and pioneer sounds proud that they even extend it an extra 30 days. But I can't help but be completely POed at the idea of now having paid not just for the unit, but the installation, the map update and now another 230. And this is for something that worked as intended for barely a year. That's embarrassing to think a multi-billion dollar electronics company can't make something that lasts a year. And if something does go wrong, please pay us an additional 15-20%. Glad I bought on Amazon, so at least the total price is just right back to Pioneer's MSRP. All they would have had to do is offer me a slightly discounted service fee...but now, why should I ever buy pioneer again or ever recommend them. One star is generous
1/9/2012 Update: I emailed Pioneer's customer service a description of the problem and included this review the week I posted (12/19/2012). No response, so Pioneer doesn't hold their customers with enough regard to actually respond to them. What should I expect though, since I was complaining about Pioneer's customer service in the first place?...Perhaps an apology?
1/17/2012 Update: Contacted (called/emailed) Pioneer support. They seemed helpful in emails, but by the time a rep called, they basically claimed I had never tried to contact them before and therefore would not do anything other than pay the cost to ship the device to them.
Summary: I reported the problem well within the 30 day warranty grace
period, but Pioneer tech support was unable to diagnose the real issue until
I was well out of warranty grace period. I spend $120 on a map update that
was intended to resolve the issue, but did not, and now Pioneer is refusing
to cover the $230 charges under warranty.
1) I purchased the pioneer AVIC unit back in August 2010, along with a full
set of Pioneer speakers and accessories.
2) I waited a few months to install everything (probably around October
2010)
3) I was very pleased with everything, and the system was working flawlessly
for about 12 months, including using the bluetooth for handsfree and audio
streaming
4) I first noticed in October that my incoming calls weren't going through
handsfree bluetooth. I waited another week or so before troubleshooting it
myself. I noticed that the Bluetooth was showing as 'off' in the bluetooth
settings and I could not turn it back on.
5) After another week, I noticed that I still couldn't do anything. And in
some cases, the bluetooth settings was say it was 'on', but it still didn't
pair with my phone. The bluetooth settings couldn't be changed.
6) I called Pioneer technical support, and it suggested it was a bypass
issue, and the installer should be contacted. At this point I was about 2
weeks out of warranty (~9/2/2011).
7) I called the installer, and they tried to troubleshoot over phone
(9/6/2011). Nothing was modified on car, and they suggested I call Pioneer
back as it might be a firmware or hardware issue. A later copy of that
email (9/19/2011) correspondence with installer attached.
8) I read up on a few knowledge bases, then called Pioneer back (~9/8/2011).
Pioneer tech support also suggested a firmware update. So I ordered the map
update and bluetooth firmware update at a cost of $120 per Pioneer's
suggestion.
9) The map update worked, but the bluetooth firmware update did not. I've
tried 2 or 3 times just to be sure. Bluetooth firmware just shows as
"------" (no firmware listed under bluetooth settings)
10) I called back Pioneer tech support, where they then told me the unit
would need to be removed from my car and mailed to them so the bluetooth
chip could be looked at. And since it was now out of the warranty and the
warranty grace period, the fix would cost me $230.
11) I was very frustrated at this point, and didn't want to pay the $230 for
something I think should still be working on a $1000 piece of equipment, or
at least still under warranty. I have since called back every couple of
weeks hoping to get someone at Pioneer support that could be more
understanding of my frustration.
12) Emailed Pioneer support regarding my frustration (12/19/2011)
13) Followed up with Pioneer support since they had not responded in 3 weeks
(1/9/2012)
14) Spoke with Pioneer Support Rep on 1/12/2012, where I was told
that I had waited too long to call Pioneer...which is a lie, because I sent them a screenshot of phone bill showing I called in October 2011.
