From the manufacturer
Two cup sizes
One convenient machine for two cup sizes, 8 oz. Coffee and 1.35 oz. Espressso, via two different capsule sizes: large capsule for coffee and a small one for espresso. Each capsule delivers the finest roast and ground coffee sealed in a single serve portion for optimal freshness.
Centrifusion extraction technology
VertuoLine Evoluo coffee makers use a patented extraction technology developed by Nespresso known as Centrifusion. Just insert a capsule and close the lever - when activated, the capsule spins up to 7,000 rotations per minute, blending ground coffee with water and producing the perfect crema to enjoy your favorite freshly brewed coffee or authentic espresso.
Automatic blend recognition*
VertuoLine uses an intelligent extraction system that recognizes each Grand Cru blend. Thanks to a barcode on the rim of the capsule, the brewing parameters are adjusted by the machine depending on the selected Grand Cru. There is no need to change settings. This delivers the best in-cup result for your chosen variety – all at the touch of a button.

But the bottom-line is drink quality and compared with both K-cups and Tassimo, the Swiss have the process nailed. There is some noise during operation, but nothing like running a burr grinder, nor does it last long - since servings process in mere seconds. The design behind the pods seems to put barcoding around the perimeter which tells the unit how much water and how long to process each pod (2 kinds - espresso and standard cup/Americano sized). The inter-pod cleaning cycle is quite thorough and doesn't cross-flavor like the K-cup units do (which is why you really don't mix tea and coffee K-cups in a sequence.) Height adjustment on the cup holder goes up to a Venti (20 oz.) cup when not used - highest is for espresso cups. Pre-heat time is 15 seconds flat before the first cup. In-between cycles are a minimum of 4 seconds to swap pods and re-lock. Both espresso and Americano pods are user-adjustable for desired water quantity - meaning if you prefer more water in your final standard cup, or less in your espresso, you can either adjust the amount as a pre-set by performing the cycle manually once and letting it repeat that, or just hold the button down until the desired amount of water is sent through the pod - full manual mode.
Frother/milk mixer can do both hot and cold milk in a max. of 2 minutes - cold froth for iced cap drinks is ridiculously fast. Fully immersible milk kettle and only 3 parts (cover, kettle, and a magnetically held whisk or stirring mini fan (used for non-froth mode) - separately powered from a sit-on power base.
Pods in 10-packs puts the pricing per cup at about $1.20 or so. A modicum of flavored coffees and decaf pods are available. Mine came with the 12 pod sampler to try most of the different variants available.
The other K-cup and Tassimo units were okay in shared office situations (like visiting a dentist and you just want a quick cup of something.) But for enjoying a daily coffee recurring single-serve set, this one fits the bill best. Break-even will probably be at about 40 cups, so payback with be in a matter of months for us. Long ago I stopped using the original wedding gift full-sized espresso station (a DeLonghi that made excellent cups) simply because unless I was running continuous cups for a party, it took too long to setup and run every single morning just to have a red-eye cup or two, and then deal with cleaning the clamps, grind cup, tampers, and forget it, if you happened to even think about a cappuccino.
One big thing - the VertuoLine pods are different from their original series capsules and incompatible with each other. The original capsules were still made of aluminum, but resembled the K-cups Refillable Capsule for Nespresso, 5-Pack The innovation in the VertuoLine (and why it makes more noise now) is how it uses the pods. The pod is actually being spun at high-speed inside the unit while the extraction takes place. It still does the original 10 sec. pre-moisten phase, but then begins whirring the pod on its axis - the slight ribs inside the pods are what are creating the froth, as well as mixing the grounds with the water. This is also why it's unlikely we'll see a refillable/reusable pod version for the VertuoLine. There's a lot more engineering in these pod designs than before, which is what generates the superior quality beverage. Most of the capsule sales are still referring to the older unit design - so pay attention to the shape of the pods for compatibility - these are more like little covered bowls.
A week, a new Vertuoline Evoluo Deluxe machine, and some two dozen capsules later, we are convinced that this is a great alternative to fussing with grinding beans and brewing, and especially to the Keurig system which pales in every respect. I will certainly keep my coffee grinders and drip coffee makers, still the best choice for potfuls of the freshest coffee and my Nespresso espresso machine for the best espresso brews but for quick coffee fixes, we love our new Evolou Deluxe!
Btw, I really appreciate the machine's very effective cleaning cycle, too!
- Biking is my primary form of exercise and brewing quick espresso shots or coffee in the morning before each ride is very useful and satisfying
- I like the convenience of quick single-served cups of coffee
- I like the overall design and convenience of having two machines in one
- I go to school early in the morning so having fast coffee is very beneficial if I ever need it (especially before tests)
- The coffee does taste a bit more "acidic" than other coffee I have had before. It was very noticeable with the Caramel (Caramelizio) and the Pumpkin Spice coffee. This is even after using a hazelnut creamer as well. (I use 3-4 tablespoons)
- Can be expensive depending on the drinker (in my case not so much since I don't drink it daily)
- POSSIBLE CON: The creme layer is more like a foam than anything so if that bothers people then that could steer them away from this machine. For me it doesn't matter and I rather enjoy the foam-like layer
- POSSIBLE CON: The temperature of the coffee usually hits between 165-175 F (which is an "improvement" over the previous vertuoline)
This machine could be useful for people who:
- Have busy schedules and need quick servings of coffee
- Only require one or two cups of coffee in one sitting (I only need one if I ever need to consume any)
- Like to combine one quick cup of coffee and one quick shot of espresso for energy
- Want the convenience of having a coffee and espresso brewer in one machine rather than two (saves counter space for those with small kitchens)
- Want coffee they can drink quickly rather than waiting for it to cool down enough to not burn themselves with quick consumption
-This machine serves its purpose for me very well and as it states in the title I wish I could give it 4.5/5 stars and not just 4. The reason for this is because the cons are not really cons to me to such an extreme extent to merit 4 stars. The taste is more noticeably acidic than other coffees I've had but still tastes very good to me since I use hazelnut creamer (3-5 tablespoons depending on the capsule). The price is not too much of a problem with me either since I do not consume coffee on a daily basis. I usually consume coffee or espresso 3-4 times per week and definitely on my biking days. It can however be very expensive depending on the drinker. As for the creme layer I do enjoy the foam but I can see how others would not like it. Also if you use creamer you need to stir it properly which unfortunately also dissolves the vast majority of the creme layer...but still tastes good and that is pretty much what matters most to me. As for the temperature I enjoy the 165-175 F temperature since it is hot but not too hot and it cools down rather fast as well. If you use creamer it will cool down much faster and you could practically chug the coffee if you wanted to. I like that when I'm really in a hurry but when I want to relax and enjoy a nice hot cup I just pour 3-5 tablespoons of creamer into the cup and microwave it for 20 seconds. I then transfer the cup to the machine and just press the button and the coffee won't cool fast. As for comparisons I unfortunately cannot make any (to other single-served coffee machines) but I do like the taste of many capsules. The ones I recommend are:
Coffee- Melozio (my favorite), Stormio (but only with certain creamer since it is a dark roast), Vanizio and the Banana Bread. I absolutely HATE the Elvazio because the "fruitiness" it has only further adds to the acidity, or at least it does for my palate. I unfortunatelyl have not been able to try the Hazelino just yet but I have heard lots of positives out of that one.
Espresso- I have tried samples of all of them and the one I like the most is the Voltesso. It tastes good to me black but with creamer it tastes delecious for me. The Diavolitto was a bit too strong for me considering how dark the roast is. Even the creamer struggled to cover that. If you like dark roasts however (and I mean dark) then you will most likely like that one along with the Altissio.
Hope someone finds this review useful :) if you have any questions ask away and I'll do my best to answer them but please remember I'm just a casual drinker of coffee if even that.
