Product Description
From director Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) comes The Nest, a powerful and dark drama. Rory (Jude Law, Sherlock Holmes), an ambitious entrepreneur and former commodities broker, persuades his American wife, Allison (Carrie Coon, The Leftovers), and their children to leave the comforts of suburban America and return to his native England. Sensing opportunity, Rory rejoins his former firm and leases a centuries-old country manor with grounds for Allison's horses and plans to build a stable. Soon the promise of a lucrative new beginning starts to unravel, and the couple must face the unwelcome truths lying beneath the surface of their marriage.

Rory is a Wall Street investor and Allison is a horse and rider trainer. They have two children, Samantha “Sam” (Oona Roche, “Hot Air”), 15, the product of Allison’s previous marriage and Ben (Charlie Shotwell, “Eli”), 10. They seem comfortable in their Connecticut home, complete with stables but one day Rory says he has been approached by his former firm back in London, where he is from. With some reluctance Allison agrees to move there so he can resume his career. Rory even buys her a black stallion to train which will be shipped to England.
Upon the arrival of Allison, Sam and Ben they find a huge mansion on several acres. Enough to build a stable. Rory wows the kids with the fact that Led Zeppelin stayed there once recording an album. Rory has rented it for a year. As well as a Mercedes for Allison and a drop dead fur coat. All seems well except Allison hates the house. It’s cold, creepy and dark. And way too big.
Rory is spending a lot of time at work to which he commutes by train. A big deal he had been working on falls apart because it involved another firm buying his current employer. His boss and owner, Arthur Davis (Michael Culkin) eventually has to put Rory in his place. As Arthur reminds Rory, while he is charming, witty and engaging he is terrible at detail and the deal stunk. Suddenly bills start going unpaid, builders stop building and Allison comes to realize, this wealthy front they put on is all a sham. They have no money other than what she’s been able to put away in a box she hides in the ceiling.
If you’re looking for a plot, don’t. There isn’t one. What this is about is the strain and dissolution of a marriage and ultimately, a family tragedy. It isn’t fun to watch. Both children are put in jeopardy due to their parent’s absence. Law and Coon are sensational and circle each other like a lion stalking a zebra. Some of their confrontations reminded me of 2019’s “Marriage Story.” Both films are hard to watch.
Looking back at my review of Durkin’s previous film I noted “While unusual endings are to be expected in film, this one left a bad taste in my mouth. The fine performances are worth watching. Technically the movie is excellent. Great visuals, wonderful cinematography and a creepy score help add to the tension. Ultimately however, the film leaves much to be desired.” I can say the same about “The Nest.”
