I'd bet that all the negative reviews come from technically illiterate people that just plug and pray. If you position it wrong, it is possible to get a worse signal than the phone's antenna. That's how antennas work.
I got about 7~10db better signal in the best places in the house (which is huge), but the performance came from less fluctuation of the signal strength overall. Without the external antenna, I'd have dips in the signal strength up to 20db or more (!). I'd go from solid 25Mbps performance to less than 3Mbps, then back up. Randomly, it would seem. Even in the dead of night with no congestion on the tower.
My uploads were occasionally in the single digits (below 10Mbps) before, and now they are never that low unless the tower is congested. Usually near 20 now. With load balancing, I get closer to 30Mbps up. It improved my ping times by about 10ms. I get 37ms 12 ft from the router.
I'm relatively close to a tower (~3 miles), but I'm deep into acres of thick woods, nearly solid, between me and the tower, at about the same elevation as the tower's base, so I get lots of fluctuations due to seasons and weather. I'll be buying another one for this price for my other hotspot. I use two AT&T hotspots with a load balancing router for home internet replacement.
Yes, it can be done. No, it's not cheap. Yes, unlimited is unlimited with AT&T. So far...

The combined clips and suckers are a good idea for providing multiple options for mounting this on a vertical surface. However, the small detachable suckers are going to be very easy to lose. If you are travelling with this then I would also recommend take along some sellotape to give you even more options for attaching the antenna to something.
The design has a significant weakness in that the connectors for the antennae are very thin and could easily be bent. I am sorry to write this review about a company whose products I would otherwise recommend and I will still buy netgear products in the future.
Works straight out box, no config of any kind required. My AC785’s EE 4G SIM went from one to four bars within 30 seconds of plugging in and fixing to an external window.
The antenna, cables and connectors all constructed well with a sold feel. (Sometimes judgements are made on the aesthetics and feel).
And that’s just standard 4G, not the latest LTE that this router is capable of.
As for the antenna, well a 33% boost in signal strength isn’t to be sneezed at.
