Water technologies saving up to 50% - Netro's advanced watering algorithms waters your garden when evaporation is minimal. Netro prevents runoffs by breaking long watering cycles into smaller ones to make water infiltrate the root zones.
Healthier Lawn - Netro's proven irrigation science creates accurate schedules that promote deep root growth, reduce watering frequency and draw more oxygen into the roots, leading to a lusher landscape.
Plants and Sprinkler Protection - Netro safeguards your plants and your sprinkler system. Netro prevents watering under improper temperature and night watering, frequently the cause of soggy lawns which attract disease.
Plant Library - With over 1000 common species (more on the way) in the Netro Plant Database, your watering schedules are customized to the particular needs of your yard.

I did a lot of research and price comparison prior to making a purchase. I was down to a choice between RainMachine and Rachio when I stumbled upon Netro. Netro had exactly what I was looking for! It does all the smart watering things you expect (gathers weather forecast, adjusts schedules, plant database, etc.), but where it excels is with the optional plant sensor, and in customer service.
The plant sensor can be used anywhere, and it is more of a soil/weather at your yard sensor. It is solar powered, so as long as you put it in a place that gets sun for at least an hour a day, you'll never need to replace a battery or charge it. Mine is in my front yard in the grass as this is my main watering zone. The sensor adds to what the Netro already does great by giving you actual weather for your house, not just your city. It has been raining/snowing here for the past 4 days and my sprinklers have not come on once, where they would have come on 4 times had I not upgraded to Netro.
Their customer service is fantastic, and the company reached out to me prior to my install to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase, and to offer assistance, if I needed it, to do the install. I appreciate a company that stands behind their product like that.
I did not need assistance with the install as the entire process is very straight forward and I had my old system down and the Netro installed and up and running in 10 minutes. The plant sensor took another 3 minutes, plus finding the right spot in the yard to stake it.
Netro is building a database of local regulations regarding when you can or can't water. My area was not in the database when I installed, but there is a place in the app where you can submit missing regulations. You can also set your own regulations if you prefer, however, I suggest submitting your local area regs, if they don't already have them. I sent min in on a Saturday and they were uploaded and on my system by Monday. Amazing!
Overall, I'm extremely happy with this system. I haven't had to adjust anything by hand (as I did before) and I haven't looked at the system to check on watering. I have looked at the system for data, which is just awesome if you are a data junky like me.
I'll admit that I would be satisfied with a basic programmable timer. The fact that this thing interfaces with weather forecasts and rainfall reports to automatically calculate irrigation frequency and timing is a plus. However, this function relies heavily on accurate weather reporting for your immediate area.
Installation was somewhat of a hassle. I replaced a beefy, sturdy Orbit timer with this unit. When I installed the sprinkler system, I used electrical wire that is thicker than normal (18 gauge). Whereas the older Orbit had screw terminals, the Netro uses push terminals that have extremely small insertion holes. Unfortunately, the 18 gauge wire is too thick for the terminal holes. I would up using smaller HVAC wire from the Netro and interfaced with the rest of the system through a screw terminal strip.
Programming the unit is not intuitive. I will admit that I'm not a tech geek who controls my entire house through apps. However, I do have a wireless thermostat and some lights. I found the Netro programming to be a little aggravating.
One other issue is the lack of physical controls on the unit. If you want to alter settings, you MUST use a device with the Netro app. Other manufacturers' devices have a touch screen that will allow physical interface with their units. If you want to pause or deactivate the entire Netro unit, you have to navigate several layers deep in the app. Other manufacturers have a "master button" (both physical and soft) that allows you to shut off/pause the controller. The actual unit is extremely lightweight. You basically are hanging a fragile computer card on your wall. It should be mounted in a protected area.
The instruction manual claims the Netro will auto-reconnect after power outages. I have found this to be false. With the somewhat extreme recent summer weather in the upper Midwest, we have experienced three power outages. The Netro failed to auto-connect after all three, while the thermostat and other devices had no problems (my wifi router is current and very capable).
I had the third auto-connect problem only a day or two ago. This made me want to return/replace the Netro. Unfortunately, I was several days outside of the return window, so I'm stuck with it. If I had a do-over, I'd look at Orbit's 6-station wifi controller. It's available at many big-box stores and at a cheaper price. I played with a display unit, and it seems to be much easier to program and use. It also has a touch-screen for physical interface.
The Netro isn't a bad unit; it's just not functionally appropriate for my situation.
Update: I emailed support through the Netro website and within 3 hours received a reply and was advised they would fix the setting from their as the app has a glitch and will be corrected with the next app update. Approximately 24 hours later Netro updated my setting. Very nice!!!!

The first one I received was faulty. Netro ran me through all the troubleshooting support and once it was determined the unit didn’t work, they sent me a new one which I had up and running in 5 mins after receiving it. I’ve had it set up for a couple of months and it’s been great.
