Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
The revised Network+ exam goes live on January 31, 2002, and our new Network+ Study Guide, 3rd edition, is what you need to approach the exam with confidence. The previous editions have been critically acclaimed and recognized by many as the leading Network+ book on the market, and author David Groth has done another excellent job updating this edition for the new Network+ exam objectives. We're also excited to note that the cover of this book sports the new CAQC (CompTIA Authorized Quality Curriculum) logo. In a comprehensive review conducted by Procert Labs, the Network+ Study Guide, 3rd edition, scored a 4.5 out of 5! If you're looking to enhance your resume with the leading vendor-neutral networking certification, this is definitely the book for you.

I took and passed the Network+ exam today using this book almost exclusively to prepare for the exam. I passed with a 780/900. I have to let it be known to others out there preparing for this test that this book does not contain ALL the information you need to know. This book will touch on most subjects, but many subjects do not go in-depth enough for this to be the all-knowing Network+ study companion. To be more specific from what I can recall from the test, there were some very specific questions about Linux client configuration and DSL configuration that were not discussed about at all in this book. Strong points of the book are the tables and graphics, they will point out all the major specifications you will need to memorize for this test. The most notable ones I recall are the well-known ports and IEEE 802 standards. The included CD has alot of practice questions even though as mentioned in some of the other reviews there are some typos and some conflicting technical information that can confuse the reader. I was going to give this book a 3 star rating, but realizing that this book still did help me to pass the exam, I have given in a 4 star instead. Just remember, it doesn't have EVERYTHING. Good luck out there.

I liked the book, I read the book carefully the first time and went back to the chapters I had troubles with and redid the 20Qs test at the end of them. I like the way Mr.Groth put things together and the examples he gives to explain a certain technology, which sometimes makes me laugh, but certainly understand what he is trying to convey in his book. This is the first book I read about him and really like his style. This book as well as the Network+ Lab from Sybex, (which by the way there is something wrong about it, read my other review for that product if you want to know) were the only reference materials I used to pass the exam on my first try (although not with the score I had liked :( bummer ) The companion cd comes with lots of questions that will help you feel confident enough to go and take the test. I would say it has like around 356 practical questions to try plus the flashcards for your PC or PDA. It has like 65 flashcards all told.
Now I have two CompTIA certifications and I'm looking forward to get my iNet+ and MCSA too. Good luck to all of you who are planning on taking this test soon.

I studied almost exclusively from this book for the exam, and passed with flying colors. The practice questions are almost word for word the ones encountered on the Exam. I looked at a couple other books, and they were way off of the material needed for the exam.
It would be 5 stars, but the OSI model isn't explained as clearly as it could have been. I actually had to read a chapter from another book to get a solid understanding of the model.
Having said that, if you know the material covered in this book, and the material in the practice exams, you should be able to pass the exam.

I was hired by a client to teach a Network+ class, and the client had no idea what book to use, we decided on the book based on the reputation of the author and a previous version of the book.. After watching the entire class pass the exam first time I can now see why David Groth is an industry expert on the subject matter.
With over 550 pages, Groth has made very short work of the exam and the exam objectives. Beginning with the fundamentals of topologies, hardware and basic network elements. Groth then spends the next 50+ pages on the OSI model, the key element in networking.
Again as with the 2nd edition there are over 100 pages just for TCP/IP. Groth covers each objective of the newest exam, N10-002, and his detail and documentation are excellent, something that had become a standard with his work.
There are over 200 questions in the book to work with plus essential exam information has also been included. In the front of the book there is an objective breakdown quick reference card that you can refer to at anytime, there by allowing you to keep track of your progress.
As with previous versions, there is a cd with practice exams to give you a chance at the exam before going live. Also included is flashcards both for the pc and palm and like other books from Groth this one is sure to be a winner.

Far too few engineers can truly articulate what they know. Groth is one of them. His book is an excellent read and a very good review. The materials are pretty comprehensive and will get you through the exam, but a supplementary text like Tod Lammle's CCNA study guide should be at hand. There are always subtle issues that an author misses or doesn't provide enough detail on.
The only downside here is that there are a couple of "important" test questions on the CD (one on subnetting and one on ISDN, for example)that were not well edited and the answers are wrong. That will get you in a bit of trouble on the exam.
All that said, I'd certainly buy a second text from Groth. My presumption (in advance) would be that it would be well written and organized like this one.

Last week I passed the Network+ with a score of 873 out of 900 (646 required for passing); and this book was my only study guide. Aside from the Apple OS X ACTC exams that I passed several weeks earlier, I'm new to the certification tracks. I wasn't sure what exactly to expect; but I found that this book had prepared me perfectly for the exam. In fact, I'm now taking aim at the A+ exam; and I've bought the A+ Complete Study Guide from the same publisher.
As some people have said before, the practice exams on the CD are harder than the actual exam. Also, those practice exams don't always grade your answers properly--which can be a little frustrating. Otherwise, the flashcards on the CD were a wonderful bonus. I enjoyed testing my knowledge with those the day before the exam.
