2016 Marked the 75th anniversary of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert. The VPO once again invited Mariss Jansons to lead the concert in what marked his third New Year's appearance.

Positives for this concert: it features 8 pieces that are new to the concerts, including the début of composer Robert Stoltz via his program-opening "Uno March," which was written for the United Nations. Another premiere is Carl Michael Ziehrer's "Weaner Mad'ln" (Viennese Girls) which features some nifty whistling from the orchestra. This is a rather long piece, and I don't recall it making the cut for the unfortunately truncated version of the concert that is broadcast on PBS the day of. Other notable premieres are Émile Waldteufel's take on Chabrier's "España" and Hellmesberger I's "Ball Scene," which gives the VPO violins a chance to show off their fast scale work.

Less positive is the over all feel of the concert, which doesn't have the mix of fun and nostalgia that other conductors brought to the mix. Indeed, I think Jansons did a better job in his earlier appearances. I got the sense that some things were a little under rehearsed, which is surprising as the concert is given twice before the New Year's Day performance. There's a small traffic issue in "Auf der Jagd" that musicians will certainly notice. Jansons doesn't appear to be having a whole lot of fun during this concert, save between numbers.

The orchestra sounds just fine. They're pros, after all. I don't get the feeling that they were inspired by what was happening on the podium.

Sound on the BluRay is fine. Visuals are good, though some of the panning shots didn't have the smoothness one expects from HD.

Another year, another concert.

The Vienna Phil have been celebrating this occasion for seventy-five years, and I'm sure they will still be doing it in another seventy-five.

As usual, a record company (in this case, Sony, although it has varied through the years) recorded the event live, and as always there is a different conductor at the helm each year (in this case, Mariss Jansons). Furthermore, and also as always, the Vienna Philharmonic plays magnificently, as though born to the music. Well, I daresay, most of the Vienna players were, in fact, born to the music.

The Vienna Phil's custom of offering a New Year's Concert started in 1941, and it's been going strong ever since. EMI, RCA, DG, Decca, and Sony are among some of the companies that have recorded the concerts over the past few decades, and in keeping with the orchestra's tradition of having no permanent conductor, they invite a different conductor to perform the New Year's duties each year. These conductors in recent times have included some of the biggest names in the business, like Carlos Kleiber, Willi Boskovsky, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Muti, Georges Pretre, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Welser-Most, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, and this year Mariss Jansons.

The two CD's in the set contain twenty-two items from the concert, but if you want to hear (and see) the concert in its entirety, the folks at Sony make it available on DVD and Blu-ray. Or if you're into vinyl, they're issuing it in that configuration as well. And as if that's not enough, the Sony people have also released a big "75th Anniversary Edition" box set containing all 319 works ever performed at the concert, under 14 conductors. A little something for everybody.

I love the Vienna Philharmonic; but as a former conductor and musician, I was not thrilled with Mariss Jansons conducting and concert. Philharmonic was amazing as usual; but I also missed the commentary by Julie Andrews.

These concerts are always incredible events. Jansons of late has included the Venna Boys Choir, which is a special delight. I was amazed this year at the number of Asian boys in the choir, which only served to reenforce my belief that western classical music is now being preserved by dedicated and talented Asian musicians. Western young people seem to be losing the discipline necessary to deal with it.
