The cardioid capsule, derived from the legendary U 87, is acoustically well-balanced and provides extraordinary attenuation of signals from the rear. Because of it's universal cardioid pattern, straightforward handling, extremely low self-noise level, the TLM 103 is an ideal choice for all demanding applications. This include home recording, professional broadcasting and commercial recording studios. The TLM 103 is equipped with a large diaphragm capsule with cardioid pattern. This pattern, used in most studio recording situations, attenuates unwanted rear sound while off-axis sounds are rendered naturally. The TLM 103 is addressed from the front, marked with the red Neumann logo on the microphone body. Assuming you have a proper acoustic environment, take the time to move the mic around. Sibilance problems are almost always because the mic is too close to the source. Give it some space and capture the entire vocal tract, not just between the teeth. Think of it like focusing a camera lens. No matter how good the camera is, if you don't take the time to focus, the image won't be good. Some mics work best when talking straight into the diaphragm, but the TLM 103 usually needs some space and attention.
As for the mic itself, it has the signature Neumann "growl" that makes thin voices thick and smooth and makes deep voices rumble. It also has a nice presence boost that is quite flattering on most voices and lifts them without getting a "hyped" sound. I've heard it compared a lot to the U87 because the capsule is based on the one found in the U87. They do NOT sound very similar, but you can hear the family resemblance. The TLM 103 is definitely brighter and quieter. The U87 has a little more "true" sound, but that's not necessarily a mark against the TLM 103, which seems to have a little more life to it than the U 87. The TLM 103 provides a little "help" to many sources. Some voices and instruments are so perfect that they are best captured as pure as possible. Those aren't that common and for the rest of us who have imperfect voices or haven't spent $500,000 on a cello can really benefit from the extra help.
Compared to other LDCs, I often see people with less expensive mics, like the Rode NT1, compare them to the TLM 103. They don't sound similar any more than a Hummer looks similar to a Corvette. Neumann has a distinct sound that nobody else has duplicated. That's not to say that other mics don't compare favorably—some do—but they don't sound alike. Neumann has a bottom-end like nothing else and the top is airy where other mics become shrill. It's a sound all it's own.
There are a number of reasons to own a TLM 103.
If you have clients and are making money from your mic, the Neumann name kind of gives you a badge that says, "I'm a pro". Clients like to see names they recognize. It's a valid reason, though it may seem silly to some.
Another great reason is that you're buying handmade quality. Few mics have hand-tensioned diaphragms. It's something special.
Neumanns are remarkably consistent. A TLM 103 purchased yesterday will sound nearly identical to one purchased 10 years ago. Almost no other manufacturers have that kind of consistency.
It's never the wrong mic. It might not be the absolute best choice for every source, but if you're in a good space and take time with placement, it will never be a bad choice.
If you're recording, you should have at least one mic you can always trust. This is a mic you can trust.
Having said that, you must realize that high end microphones means that their audio sensitivities are way up there in that they pick up sounds you never thought existed in your surroundings like the small freezer fan in the fridge downstairs behind multiple closed doors.
NOTE: If your acoustic environment "issues" are not resolved ( or untested) this microphone will open up multiple problems such as humming noises from various sources that you previously did not realize existed.
This is a very sensitive and probably one of the most acoustically sensitive microphones on the prosumer market.
I use it mostly for voice overs and it is the best mic in my studio since it really captures all the inflections that are otherwise lost (uncaptured) from other microphones within its price range. I live in a relatively quiet environment out and away from outside noises and I still struggle with acoustics so heads up to those of you who live in or nearby urban areas.
If your "voice print" is within a higher pitch range (than normal for most people) and are accustomed to a lower tone in order to inflect common narrative scales, it will get a bit of practice to get used to because with this mic EVERYTHING will be accentuated (slash) enhanced, maximized and recorded.
Some voices (particularly female)are overly accentuated due to compensation habits from using lower quality microphones.
This takes practice to adjust to but once achieved,(on the part of the vocalist) this mic is the best gadget ear you can find for the price.
I own a Rode Broadcaster and a Sennheiser 416 that I frequently use for voice overs but for a full tonal range (such as audio-book long-form narrations) this is my "GO TO" microphone.
I highly recommend that potential buyers test this microphone under various applications (whether singing or voice over narrations or what have you--extensively BEFORE buying because it has been my experience that some people simply CANNOT adjust their vocalizations to this microphone.
In other words, kick all the tires on this piece of audio gear and vocally "test drive extensively" before deciding on purchasing lest you end up disappointed for reasons unrelated to the gear itself.
I for one am supremely pleased and consider myself a very PROUD owner of this incredibly versatile microphone for any and all applications so long as all other elements of a recording atmosphere are commensurate (i.e. equal to) its capacities.
If you have an acoustically sound environment suitable for your recording needs then this is a MUST piece of gear and DO NOT be fooled by lower priced alternatives from people who have not experienced "true" quality in said category.
This is not a Volkswagon but rather a Mercedes in a whole different class.
