This book is a really tough read. I know neuroscience probably isn't supposed to be an easy read, but the author jumps all over the place. The chapters are divided up into broad sections with long heading names that don't always imply what the section is about. There are no subheadings or lists, just block text and pictures, making it difficult to outline the book in your notes. There are boxes about pathologies thrown in randomly throughout the chapter, but because the box begins when you are in the middle of a sentence about something completely different I'm rarely drawn to read them. For the most part the pictures and diagrams are clear, but when I study from this book I have to supplement with my general anatomy and physiolgy book. On several occasions the text has referred to parts of the anatomy that aren't labeled on the diagram. Not my favorite textbook...

I bought this for a class, and in fact, I finished reading the entire book. I would say it is quite clear in relating possibly difficult subjects, and the order is logical. The topics I felt it was most successful in are: synaptic plasticity and sensory systems. For cognitive neuroscience, this particular book was not as detailed as the other book by the same author, which deals specifically with that field.
Some minor typographical errors in this book, but about 10 out of the entire text is not bad.

As a grad student (not in neuroscience or biology)/former curriculum developer, I think this book could really be improved to be less taxing for students to read and process. I had no problem whatsoever with the content but the chapter-internal organization is really difficult to follow, with random seeming section ordering, boxes interrupting the text, etc. The key terms are in bold but in many cases are not clearly defined in the text, or defined at all. Frequently they refer to relevant parts of the brain, but there is only rarely an accompanying diagram of the anatomy, so you have to flip back and forth to the appendix. The prose has a lot of jargon, and it often seems like the author does not get to the point -- or does not articulate it clearly -- until the end of the paragraph (the "Thus, ..." sentences) or the end of the section ("In summary,..."), at which point I have to go back and reread everything again with that particular umbrella point in mind. Maybe this makes me sound dumb, but I wish there were shorter sentences with fewer unnecessarily big words, clear opening sentences, etc. so I could focus my effort on learning and not on decoding the text and figuring out what it wants me to pay attention to. I do get the sense that this book was intended for someone other than me, a biology undergrad for example, so maybe herein lies the problem.

The summaries and overviews do help, but it would be nice to have some key points instead (bullet points corresponding to sections of the chapter, or a list of learning objectives?). Sometimes I felt like I wasn't sure what was important and what wasn't.

Also, I was really disappointed that I could not access any of the online quizzes without being associated with a class. The chapters should really include a set of questions at the end to help you absorb the material, or at least help you think about it a bit.

I bought this a few years back for one of my graduate courses. I really like the book. Without extensive jargon, the book describes simple neuroscience that most of people with a little background would understand without a problem. I recommend if you are looking for a short, simple neuroscience book for your MS or PhD course. I think this is still a bit too advanced for undergrads.

This is a great text for medical school courses. I use this in conjunction with the Blumenfeld text, and between these two texts I feel I am well prepared for most of the questions on the exam. The figures are particularly helpful, seeing as many of the professors use them directly in their powerpoint presentations.

This textbook is great for university students in advanced neuroscience topics or advanced psychological subjects. The book is rather in-depth and a bit confusing at times, but hopefully provides good clarification in the classroom setting.

I love neuroscience and this textbook has done a very good job at cementing my love for the field. It is well-written and easy to read. My professor uses it as a supplement to his Power Point slides, as it offers a plethora of background information and details. Very good purchase.
