Neutrogena Acne Wash Review

I was previously using Cetaphil gentle cleanser purchased from Costco but didn't feel like it was strong enough to clear up my face, so I decided to use something proven to be more effective for acne. I'm very disappointed with this wash. I've heard that Neutrogena face wash is supposed to be great, and it's advertised as #1 dermatologist recommended, but I certainly disagree. For the first 3 uses (washed once in the morning and once at night and then one more morning), my skin felt so clean, especially after the very first use. The second night, though, I felt a burning sensation on my skin around my lips when I was using the wash, so I stopped rubbing immediately and rinsed. My skin felt a little puffy, but it seemed fine so I moisturized and went to bed. The next morning it felt like my face was a little numb but looked normal, so I proceeded to use the wash again. I noticed that my skin felt bumpy and kind of numb still, and upon looking in the mirror, I noticed little light pink bumps all over the area around my chin and lips. Over the course of the day, the bumps started to appear over the rest of my face. The good thing is that they're not visible until you stand really close to a mirror but still feel bad nonetheless. I also noticed patches of small white breakout pimples on the right and left side of my chin, as well as to the right and left of my lips. I did read some other reviews before purchasing that warned about this experience but I figured they could have been flukes and that the other good reviews outweighed the risk. I was wrong! That being said, I'm in the process of returning this product and will never buy it again. I would recommend that everyone else avoid this product as well!

Caused rash/breakout -- use cautiously

I've used Neutrogena products for years with no issues. I used this for two days and had a horrible breakout -- redness, itching, pimples. I don't have sensitive skin or allergies, so this is a first for me. It's been 3 days, and it feels a little better today, but I'm not going out in public like this! I used a little hydrcortisone cream on the itchy areas, and I went to my doctor. Hopefully this will fade back to normal.

What I would suggest is if you want to use this, start with only ONCE per day, not the twice per day in the directions. See how that works, then increase the usage to 2x/day. I've never had sensitive skin, so I've never had to be careful.

I did call Neutrogena customer service to tell them about it, and if you have a reaction, tell them. They are reimbursing the cost of the product.

I have used SalAc before (2% salicylic acid). That seemed gentler, which makes me think that Neutrogena has something else that's very irritating in their formulation. So use this cautiously until you are sure your face can take it!
