NEUTROGENA Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion SPF 60+

For the best protection:

Look for the following on sunscreen labels:
  • Broad spectrum: provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays
  • Water resistant
  • Photostable: describes UV protection that won’t break down when exposed to strong UV rays; sunscreens that include Helioplex broad spectrum and Purescreen technologies provide long-lasting, photostable protection
Why SPF Matters

SPF (Sun protection factor) measures protection from sunburn and other forms of skin damage caused mainly by UVB rays. It is a measurement of how long you can stay in the sun with sunscreen before getting burned from UV rays. Applying sunscreen with an SPF of 15, for example, means that it will take 15 times longer for your skin to begin to burn than it would without sunscreen. However, sunscreens should not be used to increase the time you spend in intense sunlight.

Your Sun Protection Checklist

Apply sunscreen every day! (To help prevent skin cancer, apply generous amounts of SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen for everyday protection. Reapply often during outdoor activities, especially after swimming, perspiring, or using a towel.)

Pick the right product. (Whether you're shopping or skiing, there's a sunscreen that's right for you. Look for cosmetics and moisturizers with sunscreen, as well.)

Going out? Cover up. (If you plan to be outside for an extended period, remember to wear protective clothing. Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, long sleeves, and long pants help shield your skin from sun damage.)

Be a shade seeker. (Try to avoid the sun during those hours when the sun's rays are the strongest--10am to 4pm.)

Need vitamin D? Don't seek the sun. (Although UV radiation is one source of vitamin D, UV exposure also increases the risk of skin cancer. Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet of vitamin supplements.)

No tanning bed is 'safe'. (Tanning beds work by emitting UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin. Using tanning beds may increase the risk of some forms of skin cancer.)

Keep up with your checkups. (Check your skin monthly and be on the lookout for new skin spots or any changes in existing spots. See your dermatologist regularly for full-body skin examinations, as well.)

Great product but it came without a seal. I know most of these products come with a tamper seal.

I started Udine this years ago after a bout with skin cancer left me with 14 stitches down the front of my face. The active ingredient (zinc) doesn't cause cancer (a weird irony with some sunblocks). This was the first one I found that didn't sting when I put it on my face, although I understand from other reviews that some people have gotten reactions to it. It has not increased my incidence of milia, either.
The zinc gives the skin a slight white cast, even after it is rubbed in. I use it every morning under my makeup, so that is not a problem. Even when I go without makeup, it is not very noticeable on me, but I am fairly pale. I imagine it might be a problem for darker skin tones when not adding makeup.
I am very happy with this product and have had no recurrence of skin cancer in almost 10 years (and I grew up in a time when no one heard of trying to block the sun and we used to put on baby oil and "lay out" to tan faster - it's a wonder I've not had more trouble with cancer).

This is the optimal way to block the deleterious effects of strong sunlight on skin. The only downside is that this white cream — while it disappears readily into skin — transfers easily onto other surfaces, like doorknobs, the inside and outside of the car door, and even clothing if you're not careful. However, this is a small price to pay for knowing this is both effective and safe in terms of physical health.

Where has this been all of my life? As someone who has lived in a sunny place all of my life, worked outside and who also suffers from incredibly sensitive fair skin, I have HATED wearing sunscreen due to the oh so wonderful burn that would feel like acid eating my skin off. I have tried countless sunscreens, all with the same results, unbearable burning and redness to the point I just stopped wearing sunscreen. Enter this magical potion! From the first moment I put it on my skin, I felt nothing! Sweet, beautiful, so unimaginatively appreciated nothing. I wear it every day now, even under makeup it feels light, smooth and comfortable. Thank you, Neutrogena!!

it's perhaps too greasy feeling and doesn't entirely dry. white and paste-like, it rubs off a little even hours later on anything you touch up against. it might be ok because it's for sensitive skin and therefore less or no irritation compared to other similar products at widely different prices. this is among the lowest cost options compared to others that are not drugstore brands. i prefer "colorscience" for about 3 times the price per unit volume. But i go thru it a bit fast using on my legs in Florida all year. I've tried them all and looked at it as an experiment. This means that I rotate day to day. Every choice is ok so ling as you use something. There's a place for this product. It works fine. I'm very white already without adding white paste on top. I would think darker complections would have less love for it than I do. That issue is a minor fault to me. For some it could be a bigger factor. Let's note that there's no perfect product for sunscreen. Each one can have a drawback, including high price points, unlike this item.

I have very sensitive skin and does not irritate. Even used in my face, for out in sun. Have not tried under makeup yet, but I think it might do good because it does dry very nicely.
  • Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2012
I first bought this product when I was living in Florida because I was spending so much time in the sun, either competing in or coaching track. I have dark skin and for years I never used a sunscreen until a dermatologist recommended I start using a sunscreen. I tried a few different brands, but I started breaking out with an itchy rash around the back of my neck, and between my forearms and biceps, and calves and hamstrings. After trying the Nitrogen Sensitive Skin, I figure I must be allergic to sunscreens with Benzoophenones, Oxybenzone, Dioxybenzone, and Avobenzone, because Neutrogena Sensitive Skin contains none of these as an ingredient.

I recently went to a baseball game and sat in direct sunlight for about 3 hours and had no effects from the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunscreen. Like others reviewing this product, I will say it does leave a white haze on your skin if you don't rub it in really well. But for me, I'll take the haze rather than a sunburn or allergic reaction any time.

If you can't find Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunblock lotion, try Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby sunblock lotion, because they are essentially the same product. The only difference is that Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby has added the inactive ingredients Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, and Potassium Sorbate.

The only thing I dislike is that it has a chemical smell unlike the same sunscreen in years past. It goes on smoothly and you do not notice the odor after applying it. But, I would prefer not smelling it. I called the number on the tube and told them. It does not burn or irritate my skin.
