The very high SPF and the moisturising claim in the product title drew me in, so I dived in and bought this product with little change from twenty quid.
I applied a quarter teaspoon amount in the morning as the last skincare routine step. It’s ghost white, very thick and extremely hard to rub in. I didn’t get a white cast, but I’m fair skinned. Darker skin tones may get a white cast since it’s nearly as thick as Sudocrem and looks like like bright white paint. If you get it around your hairline, or any facial hair, it will look absolutely awful.
Come 4pm I was once again a flaky mess and starting to get seriously annoyed with Neutrogena sunscreens and was going slightly mad. I decided to research my old sunscreen, and this one, since some shared ingredient must have been causing this.
I found the culprit. Silica is the second main ingredient in both sunscreens. Silica is a natural mineral used to absorb oil and moisture, it’s very similar to and works in the same way as Talcum powder.
Virtually all sunscreens contain some Silica, just to make it less shiny, which is fine and causes no problems, even for dry skinned people. It just stops the products looking like you’ve applied cooking oil to your face. But this product contains an extremely large amount. This means that every skincare product you apply will be absorbed, soaked up and virtually removed by this sunscreen as the day goes on. I’m not surprised my face looked the way it did, my poor moisture barrier must be in tatters.
The product title shouldn’t claim that the product is moisturising. It’s oil free for a start, and the main ingredient is designed to remove natural oils and any skincare products you apply underneath it as the day goes on. I’m not one to complain, but this product is awful and I’ll be returning it for a refund. I looked at the packaging and the Neutrogena website, and it doesn’t claim it’s hydrating or moisturising anywhere. So I’m unsure where the seller got this claim from. Maybe they just included it for a laugh?
Just for reference, I’ve included a photo of my face after a day at work using this sunscreen. I applied it at 8am, and took the photo when I got back home at 5pm. I can’t even imagine this product actually protected me from the sun, since it probably doesn’t work very well if your skin is shedding off like sawdust.
