Reading Line: Nineteen Mind-Boggling Tales from the Silver State

How did a photo in Texas lead lawmen to pursue members of the Wild Bunch as suspects in a Winnemucca bank robbery? An eyewitness positively identified one man, Harvey Logan, aka Kid Curry, as a culprit. But despite much uncertainty—and even evidence to the contrary—Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid continue to be associated with the September 1900 heist.

One Friday night in 1934, bank cashier Roy Frisch was seen two blocks from home, and then disappeared, never to be seen again. Infamous gangster Baby Face Nelson confessed to murdering Frisch for testifying in court about a gambling scheme. But why couldn’t Nelson lead authorities to the body? And why was Frisch’s police escort off duty that particular night?

Was the booming town of Metropolis a house of cards or a victim of unpredictable circumstances? In 1911, the nascent desert town boasted a new train depot, a brick fifty-room hotel with electric lights, a two-story stucco schoolhouse, telephone service, and concrete sidewalks. By 1918 the former oasis had lost its water source, rabbits and other pests devoured crops, and typhoid and flu epidemics took their toll on the community.

From an ancient tribe of red-haired cannibals to hidden caches of stolen gold, Nevada Myths and Legends of makes history fun and pulls back the curtain on some of the Silver State’s most fascinating and compelling stories.

Richard Moreno has written ten Nevada-related books, including Nevada Curiosities (Globe Pequot) and A Short History of Reno, Second Edition. He served as publisher of Nevada Magazine for fourteen years and received the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame Silver Pen Award in 2007. He resides in Ellensburg, Washington, with his wife, Pam.

I enjoy writing about history, particularly related to the West and the wonderful state of Nevada. Fortunately, I've been able to do so in several books including "Frontier Fake News," "Mysteries and Legends of Nevada," "A Short History of Carson City, Nevada," "The Roadside History of Nevada," and "A Short History of Reno, Nevada."

In 2007, I was honored to receive the Nevada Writer's Hall of Fame's Silver Pen Award, which recognizes emerging or mid-career writers who have shown substantial achievement in their work and a demonstrated connection with Nevada in either their subject matter or by living in the state.

For nearly a decade, I lived in the state of Illinois (to teach) and published three books about the Land of Lincoln, including "Illinois Curiosities," "It Happened in Illinois" and "Myths and Mysteries of Illinois."

I'm working on a number of new writing projects and will share news about them when they are closer to publication.
