Enjoyed this book very much. I live in Stockton, and I had no idea how involved in our community she was. What a tenacious and brave woman. Determination should be her middle name. To have survived her upbringing is amazing. Her strong will and sense of fairness. equality, and overall love for her family shine in her book. It is funny, educational and heartbreaking, all at the same time. I am proud to own a signed copy. Thank you Mrs. Minnick

I found her story both courageous and inspirational. She overcame both personal and professional setbacks that would have deterred others lacking her indomitable spirit and drive. Her life story is beautifully woven throughout with humor, humility, and pluck as she encountered life's challenges. She may not have her direct family raising and/encouraging her in her formative years; but her story exemplified how it took a "village" to help her to fulfill her dreams and potential while crossing over many bridges and avenues with their own twists and turns -- and did it "her way"

As a personal friend of the author, she had shared alot about her childhood but I never knew the minute details as she shares here in her book. I started reading and couldn't put it down until I was finished. I had seen many of the adulthood details first hand and she holds nothing back. This book gives insight into the Chinese culture and Sylvia's determination to survive and overcome the obstacles placed before her in life. She is a very strong lady and I am proud to call her my friend. This is a must read for everyone!

Sylvia's book is hard to put down once one starts to read it. A daughter from an accomplished as well as a privileged diplomatic family, she did not share privileges as did her siblings.
She chronicles family events of a family high in the Chinese hierarchy as well those (herself included) of a typical Chinese-American growing up in segregated San Francisco. A must read as the Chinese-American experience will fade in the sunset except for writings by authors like Sylvia Sun Minnick. Carolyn Jow

Wow! Her story should be a TV series! Diplomat's infant daughter abandoned to Japanese invaders, survival and family rejection, growing up in San Francisco's Chinatown, housewife and Mom, self-education, stormy political career, scholarly fame, book publisher- I can hardly wait!
