At the beginning of the story we see how Sophie and Vane (Duke of Claxton) ended up estrange from one another. Granted everyone handles grief differently, and some handle it better than others. Vane finally comes to the conclusion that he wants to fight for his marriage, and figures Christmas is the best time to reconnect with his wife. However, Sophie wants nothing to do with him, but make a baby and be done with him. Yet, Vane is willing to do whatever it takes to get back with his wife, even if it's an uphill battle in the pouring rain he plans to win.
Christmastime is a hectic time a year, so trying to to reconcile with ones spouse can go one or two ways. It could go blissfully wonderful or it can go horribly wrong. Poor Vane, it seems like the world is conspiring against him. Granted it doesn't help that his past is a bit colorful, by the way causes problems in his marriage. See this should be warning to all guys that what you do in the past does affect the future, but who really listens to that type of stuff. Anyway, that isn't the only thing conspiring against him, oh no there's more. Then you compound the problem marriage with being stuck in a place and trying to make the best of the situation.
I always think of Christmas and New Years great time to start over. I believe Vane saw this as his opportunity to make amends with his wife. However, Sophie has a hard time forgiving. Some people my find that off-putting. I did like the story and the chaos I saw. It was a lot of fun, plus having a chaotic christmas just seems to make christmas at my house not too bad. So, if you are looking for a bit of fun that is a little mess, you might want to try Never Desire a Duke.

I loved that the hero (even thought he is typical HR guy which I love!) was in love with his wife from the start and decides to work it out with her and not ORDER her back into his life.
I also loved the love scenes between the two...romantic and hot ;) there is a part were the two are making love (the h demanded that the H can make love to her but no kissing) and the H couldn't go through and apologizes in the middle of the love-making and begs her to let him kiss her....siiiiiiiiiighhhhhhh...
The only thing that irritated me about the story is the secondary characters interfering every chapter! come on!!! And the h's insistence that the H writes the list of his past lovers and then getting angry about it! And acting so crazy about it at the end...
Still...it was a good read! Great debut novel! Can't wait for the author’s next book!
The story revolves around Claxton and Sophia talking through their difficulties while solving a treasure hunt left by Claxton's deceased mother, helping their neighbors in the snow bound village, dealing with a frivolous countess and her jealous husband, delivering a baby and finally suffering through a fire. There are many ups and downs as Sophia is afraid to give her heart to Claxton and have it broken a second time. Will she be able to put the past behind them and trust her husband with her heart again?
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would read it again. The narrator for the audiobook has a soothing voice and lovely British accent. I prefer to buy audiobooks that I can listen to with my kids around, but I've already bought all of Georgette Heyer and Julie Klassen's audiobooks, so I'm branching out. This book has a lot of sensual language, Claxton imagining what he'd like to do with his wife and explicit scenes, so I have to listen to this one out of ear shot, but it was still good.
I really liked that most of the story takes place in a small village with sledding, skating, baking, and helping neighbors, which are all activities I enjoy reading about. I'm not sure how I ended up reading two books in a row about broken marriages, but I liked this better than Sherry Thomas' Not Quite a Husband. This book is not as poignant, but it felt more hopeful and upbeat. Claxton and Sophia are both very playful characters so it's easy to picture their HEA.
