Never Fear the Reaper by Ashley Pagano is a supernatural story all about a girl and a boy who meet under the most strange of circumstances. Chase has been working with his mom flipping houses. So far, they have made a good living off what they have accomplished, but the new house they are flipping has a new challenge. Something is inside the house and it does not want them their. Strange and scary things take place, and Chase decides to reach out for help from ghost examiners. Ryder comes to his aid. Instantly, Chase is drawn in by her confidence, her lack of fear in the most dangerous situations, and her beauty. After Ryder helps to get rid of the ghost that was haunting the house, Chase asks if he can go with her on the next adventure so he can hopefully get to know her better. She agrees, but as the two slowly get to know each other better, Chase begins to notice that he is getting strange new abilities, and he fears that Ryder may be the only one who can help him.
Overall, I really liked this story. Fans of the show Supernatural will most likely really enjoy this story and its style. One area that it lacked was character depth. Our two protagonists are not fleshed out as well as I would have liked for a novel like this. I know this is the beginning of a trilogy, and I will check those out, so the author does have more time to dive into who these two people are, but I wanted more from them in their first outing together.

An interesting and original premise. A young woman specializing in martial arts, etc, meets the grim reaper, and steals his scythe. She then becomes a ghostbuster. Chase hires her to get rid of something in his old house, and it turns out to be a poltergeist. The odd thing is, Chase can see it, and ordinary people can't. So Chase ends up accompanying Ryder for two more experiences – one a ghost, and then a demon. Of course, only Ryder can actually do anything about them, because none can withstand the scythe. The demon may be a slight exception – he will be killed by the scythe, but only in the same way a normal person would be killed by a normal scythe blade.
The descriptions are very good, the two main characters are well drawn, and they develop as the story proceeds. It obviously mainly ends with supernatural action sequences, and here I thought the descriptions were less realistic. I can't say why without spoiling, but while they make quite exciting reading, they do not stand up to scratch, but nevertheless my guess is a lot of people won't notice what the problems are. So with that in mind, and because everything else has been presented well, I shall overlook that in the grading.

The story Never Fear the Reaper (A Never Fear the Reaper Series Book 1) by Ashley Pagano is an amazing paranormal/fantasy book. I loved reading it. I was hooked from the very beginning and found myself lost in the pages. It not only has a wonderful storyline it has characters that I loved reading about. Ryder is a mysterious character that is asked to help out when Chase needs help getting rid of a poltergeist. She is beautiful, confident in her abilities, and has the skills needed for the work she does. Chase can’t help but be impressed with how Ryder takes care of his problem. He is intrigued, attracted, and drawn to her. He feels a chemistry with her. I love how they banter back and forth. There is sarcasm, whit, and humor. A bit of flirting is done as well. These two had me smiling when I read about their interactions. Chase gets Ryder to let him come along on some adventures with her. Will Chase get Ryder to open up to him about herself? Who will these two find themselves up against on these adventures and how much danger are they in? There is plenty of action in this story and I enjoyed the detail in which those scenes were described. This is a well-written page-turner that I would recommend reading. It is the first story in a series and I am looking forward to the next one.

I enjoy books that have a lot going on, a lot of elements. If you’re going to write paranormal, why not go all in, right? And Ashley Pagano does just that in her first “Never Fear the Reaper” novels. It’s an exciting adventure with lots of creepy enemies and super cool powers. And, of course, there’s the romance aspect of it between the very attractive main characters. Think Twilight but with a ghost hunter and demons instead of vampires and werewolves. And speaking of that franchise, I could definitely see this being made into a movie too. It has all the right qualities.

From a literary standpoint, my favorite part of the book was the first-person narration in the present tense. It’s very difficult to tell a story from the perspective of the character while the story is happening, but it’s also very effective for immersing the reader into the story. Ashley Pagano pulls it off wonderfully.

Never Fear the Reaper is the first book in the Never Fear the Reaper Series by Ashley Pagano. It is a great paranormal story with supernatural elements, action and adventure- and has a Buffy the Vampire Slayer vs Ghostbusters feel to it.
Ms. Pagano is a new-to-me author and I have very much enjoyed my first experience of her work. I was initially attracted the book by the intriguing cover, then when I read the blurb, I knew I had to read it. I will happily read anything she produces- because I know she will take me on a fantastic journey.
We begin this book with Chase meeting up with a mysterious woman who he hopes can help him with a problem that has his family quite unsettled. You see, his mother makes a living flipping houses- buying old, tired houses and transforming them into stylish ‘new’ homes. The latest flip house seems to have much bigger issues than they could have ever imagined- there have been many unexplainable disturbances and events that have put them all on edge… it appears to be haunted by quite a nasty spirit, who seems to have singled out Chases younger sister and relishes in tormenting her at every given opportunity. So, Chase takes it upon himself to find a solution to the problem and hopes that Ryder will be the answer they are looking for. But when he lays eyes on her for the first time, she is nothing like what he was expecting, he’s immediately attracted and intrigued by her- but doubts that she would be able to help with their ‘problem’. But, with no other options, Chase decides to see what she can do. What he witnesses when Ryder does her ‘thing’ will set Chase on an adventure that will change his life forever. What does he witness? Who, or what is Ryder? Why can Chase ‘See’ what she can, when others can’t? What happens when he offers to ‘help’ her? All these answers and so much more can be found by reading this absorbing tale. If you love a great paranormal story that will hold your attention, has an interesting storyline and engaging characters, then look no further because this book has what you what- it really is worth your time and money.
