Book Review by Meg Blaine Corrigan
Alexis Acker-Halbur’s book Never Give Up: Break the Connection Between Stress and Illness should be placed in the hands of ever person who is about to give up! I would describe this book as a combination memoir/self-help/how-to-tool-kit for practically any aspect of a person’s life. Acker-Halbur has been through it all—or at least enough—to easily have thrown in the towel and curled up in a ball in the corner. But instead, she has come through a boatload of trials and is still one of the most positive people I am privileged to know. How has she done this? By making a conscious decision each day to live fully by what she has learned along the way. These lessons include, but are not limited to, “Talking honestly about your emotions to strengthen your immune system,” “Being and accepting who you are—good and bad,” “Loving yourself unconditionally—self-love is the foundation of your being,” and “Being positive in the midst of a crisis—difficult, but do it anyway.” Never Give Up is chock full of positive affirmations and personal exercises to help the reader find and use the tools required to keep on keeping on in the midst of trials and celebrations, mountains and valleys. As a retired mental health counselor, I wish I had had this book when I was working with my clients and students. A gem of a book like this doesn’t come along every day, and the day this book was published was a great day for mental health!
