well made, acting is great, story is good, this is a very dark film about life in the old west. the camera work adds to the darkness. i would have given it 5 stars but it didnt quite hit "that" mark.
if your in the mood for a dark drama this one wont disappoint.

So much mud!

Depressing town. The weather during this movie is also depressing. Gray skies and mud everywhere. You just can't help noticing the mud after a while. You feel this gloom and that things just won't go well. And they don't. The pastor runs the town and he is a little over the top. The Sheriff isn't worth much. In rides some not very nice outlaws. So this is definitely a nightmare waiting to happen. I am sure you are getting the picture. I found this a very depressing movie. You just feel very uncomfortable and on edge from the beginning and the discomfort continues. Acting is very good, but there is so much mud!

Welcome to the dark and grity old west!

Settings here were perfect. Mud, dirt, disease, early deaths, and vice galore. Watching this drug me into the not so pleasantly produced old west that we see in many other films. I could hear the mud squishing beneath my boots. I could smell the vices in the revived saloon and the over perfumed ladies. "Never Grow Old" captured what must have been the grity side of the old west and intentionally framed it dark. Five stars would be deserved if the story had flowed a bit better as I keep thinking that I was missing something. I was not. Cusack's plays a truly despicable bad guy who only barely eeks past Preacher Pike in treachery for personal gain. Our hero only becomes so after learning the hard way that we must not pretend to be something we are not for that may be the image cast upon us for all time.

So this is a good movie. It is a bit better than four stars but not a true five star flick. Very much worth a watch as what is does with well worn wild west tropes is expose the dirty underbelly. Well done.

pretty good but SLOW western

I liked it, but the fast forward button saw some use to get thru the SLOOOOOW parts. Decent acting, and good sets. But it was real slow.

Basically a bunch of mousy townspeople get trampled on - when a devil rides into town. Cusack does a good job of playing a soulless bad guy. Will the mousy gutless townspeople get rid of the evil which has ridden into town? Or not?

I liked the plot, but it was just lacking. Not enough to be interesting. The depiction of a typical 1800's town was realistic. Lots of tromping thru mud, etc. But one has to wonder. If pioneers would have been this gutless, would those personalities been early settlers?

OK film, but be warned about the violence.

This could have been a great film, but there are just too many holes in this story and Cusack's performance is too over-the-top! Worth a look, but keep your expectations lower than usual. Slightly better than just OK.

The Western lives but only if it's made in a country other than the one where it took place

Leave it to an Irish director to give us a Western in this age that's overrun by superhero films. I was totally impressed by this film, from the way John Cusack portrayed the evil saloon owner who overtook a town that had chosen to forsake guns and prostitutes for Godly measures and how one man ( Emile Hirsch ) finally came forward to save what was left of the town. If only American studios dared to revive this genre which I believe still has a faithful following despite what all the cgi-laden superhero/ sci-fi movies that glut our landscape would have us believe. Thank you, Ivan Kavanagh, for keeping the Western alive.

It's more a 4.5, but the bad reviews were out of line. All the acting was excellent and I think John Cusack was a really good creepy bad guy. This is a great western of late there have not been many.
