Editorial Reviews

Joyce Manor was conceived in the back of a car in the Disneyland parking lot the kind of beginning California dreams are made of. It was the fall of 2008, and over a bottle co-founders Barry Johnson (guitar, vocals) and Chase Knobbe (guitar) decided to team up under the moniker Joyce Manor, named after an apartment complex Barry walked past every day. Their first self-titled album in 2011 exploded out of nowhere; across two albums, they discovered what Joyce Manor really sounded like the speed and sense of melody of fellow South Bay band the Descendents, the artfully bittersweet lyricism of Jawbreaker and the undeniable heart-on-sleeve honesty of the first two Weezer albums. By the close of 2013, they had signed with Epitaph, and now had the experience, the discipline and the inspiration to make one of those rare albums that redefines a young band Never Hungover Again. Friend and Philly producer Joe Reinhardt took the controls in Hollywood s analog dreamland the Lair, and they assigned the final mix to Tony Hoffer the guy who found the definitive sound for Supergrass, Belle and Sebastian, M83 and Phoenix. Together, they made an album of pop-punk in paradox, right down to the title and photo on the cover. It s something like believing the impossible, says Barry, or at least the too good to be true: "Those people look wasted yeah, there will definitely be a hangover! There will be pain! " And from the first song, it s ten precisely put-together songs about how things fall apart, with some of the saddest lyrics you d ever shout along to from the front row.

This album's infectious and original pop punk is sure to be stuck in your head after first listen. Choice cuts in my opinion are Schley and Catalina Fight Song. If you're looking for a record chock full of catchy but creative blink-182-esque numbers with unconventional hooks that explore the boundaries of the pop-punk genre, this record right here is it.

This is quintissential indie punk. And the important distinction to make is that unlike most other albums to come out in the last 20 years, I would legitimately call this PUNK rather than the now extremely popular and commercially successful pop punk. They do a great job throwing back to the style that started it all while also mixing in modern additions to the genre that have kept it popular to this day.

The album itself is great, but it doesn't come with a CD like it says, and 20 dollars is a TOTAL rip when this thing is only 19 minutes long...

For music in this genre, you can't charge 20 bucks for a 20 minute LP. $20-25 is a double LP price. Definitely, not a single, short LP price.
I feel like it says (LP+CD) to make you feel like 20 dollars is reasonable, but rest assure, it isn't.

DOES NOT COME WITH CD AND VINYL IS PIECE OF CRAP, SEEMS A LOT MORE PIRATED than original, sounds sound terrible and I'm a biy joyce manor fan. I ordered a replacement of this hoping it'll be better- no same piece of crap.

Every single Joyce Manor album is good, this one is no different. Ten slickly produced Hardcore/Pop-Punk tunes about love, teenage angst, and growing up.

Nothing wrong with it other than false advertising. It says (LP+CD) but it didn't come with a CD. Still a great album though.

Calmer and less chaotic than older material but still beautiful
