I just couldn't like Ethan for hooking up with, marrying and having a kid his his exs sister.
He reflected too much on his dead wife and called her the woman who made him the man he was today, um, he got her pregnant after a drunken one night stand, not Lara his girlfriend of four years, who is raising his kid. Which he named after Lara and he had picked out kids names. No because he's clueless. Yay for having real working characters.
Also, they hooked up obscenely quick after his wife, her sisters' passing.
That being said, I did purchase and read in one afternoon.
Unfortunately I was disappointed with what I read. Don't get me wrong. The storyline had a lot of potential but I never got the feeling that Ethan really was in love with Lara. Throughout the book Ethan is quoted as remembering Alexis or missing Alexis even though their marriage was one of 'the right thing to do' due to a pregnancy from a one night stand.
In addition it was mentioned that Ethan had only slept that one time with Alexis but then later the story mentions that his oral executions became perfected with his relationship with Alexis. As well as the fact that when Ethan tells Lara that it was only a drunken one night stand with Alexis and that they had a 'not so perfect marriage' it made it sound as if he wasn't in love with Alexis except throughtout the story he was always torn because he missed his wife and what they had.
The final buzz kill of feeling as if Ethan was truly in love with Lara was at thier wedding when Ethan mindlessly starts reflecting of Alexis being teary eyed when he and she got married while the efficient is wedding him and Lara. Excuse me... but what?!?
The fight of custody between the grandparents and Ethan with Lara over Riley was the only thing that made me think Ethan and Lara had any connection other than sex when they stood up against thier parents.
Maybe I was just expecting something different from this story but the author asked for my honest review and these words are how the story left me feeling...
I couldn't quite understand Lara's anger and betrayal towards Ethan and her sister since they hooked up a few years later after she and Ethan broke up, and also she was the one who left Ethan in the first place. I felt like she more than overreacted, especially with how she barely had any contact with her parents also. Saying that Ethan broke her heart was just laughable, and made her immature and childish.
Ethan was in my opinion really contradictional character. He would explain how Alexis and he had a one-night-stand and she got pregnant so they got married, but they would sleep in separate bedrooms and were more like friends than a real couple. And then on the other hand, he would think how he misses Alexis, how he can't accept that his wife and mother of his child is dead, and all that in a way you would think she was the love of his life.
Finally, Lara and Ethan getting back together seemed kind of forced, like they are together just because of Riley. I noticed that even in epilogue when they get married, there wasn't any "I love you". Through the whole story the love between them was mentioned once and that was in Ethans inner monologue when he was thinking how Alexis would want him to fall in love again, but they never say I love you to each other. For me they were just two people who together care about a child, and occasionally end up having sex.
The story itself was very well written, I just can't say I felt a connection between Lara and Ethan. Yes they both more than loved Riley, but each other not so much.
