I'm glad the second and third books will be out soon, because I don't want to wait!
Jennifer Brozek's writing is punchy and satisfying, and she keeps the action moving smoothly. This is not a book that you'll struggle through. Melissa's voice is clear and strong, and the plot engaged me and drew me along for page after page.
Never Let Me Sleep skews YA, but it's a TERRIFYING scenario. I enjoyed it tremendously, especially for Melissa, the hero of the tale. She's not only brave, she's clever and extremely tough. And she's believable in how she tackles problems, as well, which is part of what's so frightening about the story. Melissa isn't a superhero, and the task she faces is epic: save herself, and defend her town (and quite possibly the world) against something incomprehensible. And all she has is an iPhone and a baseball bat. How can you NOT root for a hero like that?
The story and the writing are appropriate for teenagers, but is also engaging for adults. The story is fresh and emotionally engaging. I can't even complain that I read it too fast, because there are two more books in this series and I can't wait to get started.
I wish I'd had this book as a teenager.
Safe for younger readers, and resonates on a deeper level for the well read. I look forward the the rest of the series.
This story started out a little slow for me but then I couldn't put it down until the last page. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series!
