“I’m a sucker for a good romance, but when it’s a romance that’s more than the norm and is written quite well, and has two main characters that you empathize with and whose issues you desperately want to see resolved, and a story that makes you not just feel but think about what you would do in the same situation, then it certainly stands above many of those in the same genre. . . . I highly recommend Never Tear Us Apart to any reader who appreciates genius.”—Bookaholics Not-So-Anonymous

I love Monica Murphy, so of course when I saw she was releasing a dark contemporary romance I was jumping at the bits to read it. Now that I have finished Never Tear Us Apart, I am completely torn. The one thing I know for sure is I desperately need the conclusion to the story!

Katie Watts was abducted, beaten and raped when she was twelve years old. Her life as she knew it was over and she quickly learned her actual life would soon be ending, too. Will changed Katie’s fate. A young boy himself, he choose to go against his fears and do the right thing. He saved her from his father and took her to the police.

Now eight years later Will has changed his name and tried to leave his past behind him. Despite years of therapy Katie is struggling to do the same. Everyone knows her story and everyone wants a piece of her. Regardless she tries to move forward, to be a normal girl and experience things other college students are doing. Katie is trying to move on when she meets Ethan, but he is holding back a huge secret that could completely destroy her.

This story is super fast paced and I was immediately engaged. I was so desperate to get some answers. I wanted to know everything about Katie and Will’s past and what their future would hold. I was not disappointed in that regard, but even after I finish I am still left with tons of questions and lots of mixed feelings. I am seriously struggling with how I feel about everything and who can be trusted.

The story is told in dual point of view and switches from past to present so the reader can see the full story. I can honestly tell you this story will have you in knots. My feelings have gone back and forth and I have had an ongoing debate about how things will play out. I am so desperate for the sequel and conclusion to this story. I highly recommend if you like darker romances, with a hint of suspense. (The suspense is probably just me, but I am seriously jacked up over this one!)

The story itself was extremely captivating. The somewhat low score (I wanted to make it a one star, but the great writing stayed my hand...) is for the annoying beyond belief cliffhanger.

This seems to be a new 'thing' and it's one I deplore. The writing and story would've been more than enough to compel me to buy the next book and maybe even seek out other novels by the author, if she hadn't abruptly stopped. No real resolution, just 'bombshell' then done.

Have you ever wondered what happen to the person who you helped save? Well that exactly what Ethan wondered about after seeing Katherine (Katie) Watts give her first ever interview about what happened to her when she was twelve. It wasn’t enough to just see that she was doing fine but Ethan needed to know that after everything his father put her through that she was truly fine. He needed to connect with her but what was just an innocent gesture of friendship turned out to be so much more…

I was given this in exchange for an honest review.

Katie is a survivor! She went through hell when she was twelve but with the help of William Monroe she escaped and made it back to her family. Katie knows she’ll never be the same but the one person whom she connected with was taken away from her because it was his father who had taken her. Katie hated when Will stopped talking to her. What kept her going was knowing that she’s a survivor and that in helping her, Katie helped Will escape his own terrible life.

It’s been eight years but seeing Katie on TV brought back the memories to time when he was William (Will) Monroe and he helped Katie escape. Today and every day since he turned eighteen Will has been Ethan Williams. He has a successful career but a quiet life. He has never forgotten the day he found Katie and the day he was forced to walk away. The desire to protect her has never left and seeing her now just brings those desires to life.

First, I want to say that this book comes with a note from Monica stating that parts of the book may be hard for some to read considering what the story is about. I have to give her praise for taking such a hard story and tell it in the way she intended it to be.

Never Tear Us Apart had me curious. It showed up on my doorstep with the promise of a dark and twisty read. It totally had my number and I enjoy Murphy--she can deliver such vastly different experiences with her series--so it definitely peaked my interest. And for the most part I enjoyed this twisted tale of two people damaged so thoroughly during their childhoods coming back together years later as adults. And things went well...until they didn't. There are going to be some semi-spoilers so *waves hands about* be warned and all that.

The Yay:

A dark twisty storyline. I really loved the set up for this one even though it was hard to read at times. When she was a child Katie was kidnapped and raped. And then rescued by the son of her rapist who freed her and got her to safety. I mean. This is some difficult s***! And it created a bond between they each desperately needed to get through the ordeal. The adults in their lives thought differently and they were torn apart from each other. Now 8 years later she's telling her tale and he finds her. There's just so much room for a truly emotionally gripping encounter.

Great Characters. Both Katherine/Katie and Ethan/Will were interesting. They're damaged but have incredible strength. Katie is a survivor and I loved that about her. "I'm not a victim. I'm a survivor. Big Difference." I knew then I was going to be rooting for her and that I would love her character. And I did. She might not be totally recovered but she was working towards getting there. And Ethan is a good guy. He's caring, gentle and just what she needs in her life.

A unique format. I liked the way the story was told as well. It was different but worked.
