About the authors

I'm the author of "The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory." It's been called "ground-breaking" and "pioneering" (interesting how our description of books draws from our invasive relationship to the land). Many say it is an underground classic, which I guess means that lots of people know and love it, but it goes unnoticed by the dominant media. Of course, when it first came out, that was slightly different. Then, right-wing reviewers around the world held it up as the latest example of academic excess and political correctness, which was funny to me, because I am not an academic. I used to teach a course I developed at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University on "Sexual and Domestic Violence: Theological and Pastoral Issues" -- but very infrequently. Basically, for as long as I have been an adult, I have been an advocate, an activist, someone trying to figure out how do we transform this d*#! world that is built on inequality.
I have published more than 100 articles in journals, books, and magazines on the issues of vegetarianism and veganism, animal advocacy, domestic violence and sexual abuse. I am particularly interested in the interconnections among forms of violence against human and nonhuman animals, writing, for instance, about why woman-batterers harm animals and the implications of this (it's in my book Animals and Women). Besides advancing scholarship and developing theory in the area of interlocking oppressions, I have created a series of books that address the vegetarian/vegan experience: Living Among Meat Eaters: The Vegetarian Survival Guide, Help! My Child Stopped Eating Meat! and The Inner Art of Vegetarianism.
I've worked to bring back into print Howard Williams's nineteenth-century classic text on vegetarianism, The Ethics of Diet. I have contributed prefaces to important vegetarian, vegan, and animal defense books and discovered an eighteenth-century vegetarian work that had never entered the vegetarian tradition.
Because I am so deeply moved by my relationship with animals, I have authored books of prayers for animals for both adults and children.
I am excited that the 20th anniversary edition of The Sexual Politics of Meat has been published!
I also write about literary topics, including two "Bedside" books: one on Frankenstein and one on Jane Austen. I am finishing a memoir on caregiving and reading. I really love the Bedside, Bathtub, and Armchair Companion to Jane Austen. In Britain, it was nominated for an award by the Jane Austen Center in Bath!

This book got me over the hump. I am now a very happy fledgling vegan. I feel no deprivation whatsoever. My desire for animal foods is fading FAST. The book helped me realize that there are great-tasting vegan versions of practically anything. And if feels so good to be finally living consistent with my convictions.
The book is extremely informative as well as inspirational. It's worth the price just to learn about the incredible array of vegan resources that are available out there.
The authors mention that one of the things people most regret on their deathbeds is not living in accordance with their true selves - going along with the culture or family or church or whatever, when their real selves want to go in a different direction. That point really hit me. I realized that in my heart of hearts I am a vegan. Maybe you are, too. This book can certainly help you find out.
affect my body was terrific. From which foods will lower blood pressure to the choices that will make me generally feel better, I gained so much information that has already informed my choices. Plus, the recipes are spectacular -- easy to make and delicious. As they say in the book, people often love vegan dishes as long as they don't know they're vegan. I've already made a soup that got rave reviews and found a cheese substitute in nutritional yeast that made my palate and my arteries happier. I read the book completely, even the recipes and found it more than satisfying. If you are looking for a great resource about healthier eating, even if you aren't going vegan just yet or ever, this book will more than do the job for you.
I loved the entire book, but one feature I especially enjoyed was 'Our Vegan Lives' when Ginny, Carol and Patti answered specific questions like: 'What's in our fridges', 'What's in our vegan homes', 'Tips that helped us become vegan', etc. This book is the one written for my generation with solid evidence-based science, as well as the personal touch. It's a masterpiece!
Sweet Potato Falafel is not under Falafel.

Exploring Vegan Diet. Good so far. Lost 30 lbs, diet only.

The drastic change to plant-based led me to look on YouTube for more information. I looked at The China Study, Dr McDougall's work, Dr Greger, Dr Barnard and Alan Goldhammer. I bought books, bought some on Kindle (and learnt evoke are OK for novels but not so easy for referencing). I watched the talks and webinars, used the apps, was inspired by recipes, gave away loads of food and bought in new foods like almon, rice and coconut milks, I tried vegan cheese (yuk!) and discovered that I still don't like kale but I can live without it too, found beanie burgers, some awful sausages the some great ones (Cauldron) and found out loads about the digestive system. I also doubled my loo-roll shopping as things certainly shifted rapidly!
But of all the truly inspirational things I've read and heard (and there's a lot of rubbish on ayouTube, the Never a too Late to Go Vegan is up at the top. There are charts that tell you what you need daily, 10 ways to transition, how to address some of the often silly comments made to you, simple changes you can make to the meals you already eat and great recipes from everyday meals to festive feasts. I cannot recommend this highly enough!
Looking forward to my next GP/diabetic nurse appointment in a couple of months - BP down from 198/90 To 128/79 and since I consume only cholesterol from plants, I anticipate this will be lower.
And I'm hopefully leaving the environment a better place and not harming any living thing on my journey.
