Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
Artist and paints developer Tauchid explains the properties and applications of acrylics, a medium touted as "the most adaptable art material of the modern age." Tauchid begins by characterizing this do-it-all, fast-drying paint with its unparalleled clarity of dried pigment and bondable, virtually glass-clear polymers that do not degrade, discolor, or become brittle with time. These nontoxic chemical inventions, on the market for some 50 years, comprise more than 60 percent of all artists' paints sold in North America today. Technical in its approach, half the book describes the chemical components, attributes, production methods, and grades, moving on to a basic primer that lists materials and equipment. Tauchid then progresses to basic applications, which include glazing, underpainting, and staining, and goes on to discuss barrier-breaking alternative approaches (stained glass, acrylic transfer, even soft sculpture), complete with demonstrations. A variety of artists' work in eye-popping color and a wide range of styles amply illustrate this well-indexed resource. Whitney Scott

Not what I expected. I am 1\2 way through the book and all it does is give considerable detail to the acrylic paints. I don't care what it is consisted of. I just wanted a book to tell me what acrylic mediums and texture products to use and what they were good for. The author is very detailed and knowlegeable of the product. But the title of the book and even looking inside led me to believe it was a good book for instruction on how and what to use it for. Not that kind of book.

Overall, the value of this guide depends upon your experience with acrylics (both colors and mediums) and your willingness to think outside the box. If you enjoy playful creating--as opposed to rigid rules--you will find this book informative (in text) and inspiring (via photography).

As a beginner painter of acrylic medium, I needed a solid book of reference to enhance my classroom painting. I was lucky enough to land myself in a class with a professor who shares the same philosophy of art that I do; he started us off with still-life compositions, limited pallatte and optical illusion excersises, but then he released us into our own creative directions - once we had the basics down. He also encouraged us to go out and "see" art; as it is not the same to merely glance at art on the Internet. Seeing an actual art piece at a museum or art gallery is akin to inspriation because one "see"s the paint strokes that create the image on canvas, or wood or brass. It is interesting to learn that all sorts of paints can be used to create all sorts of imagery. Seeing watercolours, oils as well as acrylics works is vital to grasping greater knowledge about one's abilities to put paint on canvas. Our little world of acrylics is the best, in my humble opinion, because the paints are so stable, dry fast, and can be repainted over and over if the artist wishes to do so.
What is also interesting is the tools that one can utilize to "paint" such as brushes, which are the most predictable and basic types of tools - but also one can be challenged to paint with palette knives, foam daubers, airbrush apparati, rollers and other graining tools, such as chunks of wood. One can boost creative expression by attempting to paint by fork, knife or spoon. Improvising is also daunting; on page 42 the idea of putting acrylic paint inside of a pastry bag and pushing it through a standard frosting tube is introduced and - yes - I will try this technique in the new year! What fun that will be!
Painting is fun; it is a farther extension of who I am as a person who cares about beauty in this world and I also care about my fellow man.
Painting is all about color - painting is all about the paint, because paint is emotion. Painting is symbolism and metaphor, and it takes patience and a long time to bring emotion to the eye of the beholder.
I love this book and plan on re-reading it tonight!
It is an extremely popular book in my area in regards to the formal study of painting; I was happy to get it at the Amazon.com discounted price of $16.00 / such a deal!

Great information! Gets you started. Some folks complain about her use of a Canadian brand of paint. Fir the most part it applies to most brands. Plus its the concepts.

I recently ordered this book and still have not received it, but I ordered it because I checked it out of the library & knew I had to own a copy 10 minutes after opening it.
I have read or perused many acrylic painting books in the last year, either via purchase or from the library.
This is by far the best one I have seen yet, when it comes to giving you ideas on techniques you may not have even considered.
If I could give it 6 Stars, I would!

Just wanted to write a review because the title doesn't give you much info as to what's in the book- I bought it just because I love acrylics and there aren't many books on the subject compared with other mediums. Much of the book is about textural acrylics- acrylics made thick with mediums. They really get into showing you many photos of obscure working methods like cutting up sheets of tinted (dry) acrylic gel into squares to make a mosaic or how to make a stained glass panel with transparent acrylics. This is a very good book for learning about the paint itself, what it's made of, what effects can be achieved by manipulating it, how to do silkscreening, monoprinting, and acrylic transfers. You won't find any paintings of flowers in this book! If you love acrylics this is the book to broaden your horizons. :)

First of all, I really liked this book. It has loads of information on media, color, use and technique presented in a clear and conversational manner. It is the perfect stepping stone between the cutesy intro books to acrylics that can't serve as a reference and a purely academic tome on the chemistry and development of the acrylic media. There are lots of art books that go for cheap in the used arena ( I bought a few as I just jumped into acrylics) but this one is a keeper.

This is the best "Anything Goes" book ever! There are lots of beautiful - and sometimes strange - illustrations using various objects, layering and thick mediums. It is great for someone who wants to go into the dreamish realms of escape! It is not just flat artistry. It has the bumps of creativity with all of the wild colors! No one could make a mistake with this type of creativity. It would be great for beginner's who are first experiencing acrylic mediums because it goes into detail about how to mix and layer. This book is spectacular!

An Indispensible Guide to the New Generation Acrylic Paints
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 15, 2008Verified Purchase
I would recommend this book to anybody new(ish) to acrylics. If you want to stop regarding acrylics as mimic alternatives to oils and start understanding them as a completely new medium full of exciting possibilities of their own, then this is the book for you! It is a comprehensive guide through the mind-boggling range of paint types and media that will take a lot of the guesswork out of choosing what you need to achieve the effects you are looking for.

This book is very informative about the new generation of acrylics a must for any serious artist using this media. It is not so instructional but more technical showing how acrylics can be used both as a painting medium and as a material for other artistic endeavors. A really useful addition to any artists library.

Love the book - Being an oil painter for years - it de-mystifies working with Acrylic paints. It explains the different paints, mediums and techniques in a understandable manner. I am excited to try working with acrylics. I recommend the book.
