Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"This is George. George was a good little monkey and always very curious." Upon hearing these words, generations of children have settled in for a cozy interlude of adventures with their favorite trouble-mongering chimp. Fans of the insatiably inquisitive George will be delighted to find that eight new adventures, written and illustrated in the style of George's creators, have been collected in one big blue book. Each story follows the same pattern; the man with the yellow hat trustingly leaves George alone for just a minute--which is long enough for him to get into a peck of trouble. The lovable monkey tempts disaster and saves the day over and over, first in a chocolate factory, then in an animal shelter, a movie theater, a hot air balloon... but can we blame him? Who hasn't wondered how chocolates get their swirls, or what makes a movie appear on the screen?

Featuring the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of Curious George CD-ROMs, these stories are every bit as hilariously satisfying as those of the Reys. Curious about George's other escapades? Try The Complete Adventures of Curious George. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

I simply cannot understand why people are giving this book a hard time. Yes it is true that the stories & pictures contained in this wonderful collection were not actually written and drawn by the Reys, but who really cares? This book stays true to the Curious George tradition. In fact, if it wasn't stated in the book, you might otherwise never have noticed. The stories are humorous, fun, exciting, suspenseful and always have a happy ending. The adventures George gets into in this series are more applicable to kids today. Although it is fun to see George get sent into space, a child simply can't relate to that. However, I don't think there is one of us who can't empathize with the excitement of going to a movie or the fun or playing with puppies. The bottom line is that you could nitpick the details of it, but if you don't like this fabulous collection, then you don't deserve to call yourself a true Curious George fan.

I have to respectfully disagree with the preceding reviews. This book is great! My 3 year can't get enough. The art is outstanding and the stories are fun. One of the simple facts of parenthood is that you will end up reading the same books hundreds of times. They might as well be Curious George books.

every story in this book has been made with the same storyline. The original fun and creativity is gone.
My opinion - if you want good original George, buy the original, this is rehash which can be great for the very young, but my daughter and I have quickly gotten bored with this

My 21-month old son loves the book, but I'm thoroughly sick of it already even though I've previously enjoyed the Curious George books. These stories are barely different from some previous "George" books I've read - for instance, Curious George and the Puppies is very, very similar in story line to Curious George and the Bunny - which is itself a rehash of a scene in Curious George Flies a Kite. I agree that the illustrations are great, and I realize that little kids like to know what to expect from a George book, but at least the adventures should sound adventurous!

If you are buying for a potential Curious George fan I suggest you stay away from this collection until you have read the originals together and established Curious George as an adventurous character.

(UPDATE) Though my son liked the collection of original Curious George stories, he did not initially respond to the new collection. Lately he has grown to like this book so he would probably rate the collection higher than I have.

From a parent's point of view these stories are 'safer' in that (unlike the original stories) George never does anything that would be considered truly irresponsible or dangerous. The following will NEVER occur in the new stories. George will not knock himself out with ether, he will not be swept away while grasping a bundle of helium balloons, George will not climb the side of a skyscraper without a belay, nor will send his customers' newspapers downstream as paper boats - etc. Rather, in the new formula everything George seemingly does wrong is relatively safe and turns out to benefit the other characters.

Though the new stories are arguably more parent friendly, this also leads to why many adult Curious George fans dislike the new stories. While reading, one constantly feels the deadening hand of a marketing department bent on insuring that no risks are taken and that the Curious George brand is in no way jeopardized. Ironically the resulting stories are antithetical to Curious George - I would even go so far to say that the stories do not reflect the same character. It's truly saddening to see such a wonderful, creative character lacquered in this way - and that's why you see one star reviews for this compilation.

(And now it appears that the same business interest has spammed Amazon with cheery 5 star reviews.)

My two year old loves Curious George series so this book definitely attracts her.
She would sit and go through with me two stories a time, takes more than 20 minutes.
That's a long attention span for an active toddler to sit through and focus on.
And she asks questions and follows the story line pretty well.
I'd say this book isn't that well written for a young child but with a little
shortening and simplifying on the wording it works well.
The pictures are catching and the stories are interesting. Good buy.

We bought our daughter the Complete Adventures of Curious George and thoroughly enjoyed the long meandering story lines. In the New Adventures, the stories are more focused, brief, and formulaic. My daughter still enjoys the stories, but I get bored.

Our grandson loves Curious George and would rather have us read this book to him than watch the monkey on TV. The book stays at our house, so this has become a high point of his visits. Like most three-year-olds, he loves hearing the same stories over and over. Even though these are added stories, they maintain the same flavor and mischievousness of the originals. We have the hardback, and the quality of the binding seems excellent. It is holding up well for us.
