The other theme is the conflicted climber mentality: Settle down and live real life or be a free dirtbag. I would have loved to read an insightful dive into this persona. I've considered myself part of it from time to time. But the author never really explored these thoughts. They were just broken passages that turned into whines about the ex-girlfriend.
I had high hopes but I just couldn't enjoy this one like I wanted to.
Titled as a "mixtape" I think that would be a good frame of mind to use when beginning to read the book. It doesn't have the feel for a full on novel, but it was long enough to keep me entertained for a week or so.
Leonard is not afraid to bear his soul on the page, and something he does well is encourage others to follow their own passions and dreams. As someone who lives the same lifestyle as Leonard I took my "grand tour" of the West much earlier in life; since Leonard waited so long (into his thirties) his coming of age story is much richer than the young twenty something. The journey that unfolds left me wanting more from a writer who could very well go onto filling the same literary shoes that Kerouac once tramped across the country in.
Perhaps it is because Leonard's writing mirrors the experience I had living on the road for five months in my early 30s but I believe this book perfectly captures the majesty and wonder that can be seen, heard and felt living on the road out in the American West.
This is a fast read and one which will inspire you to take that trip you have always been thinking about. A quote from Leonard: "We all have dreams, but they don't mean much if we put them in a drawer labelled "someday" for when we think there will be more time."
Pick up this book, get inspired and make your "someday" be tomorrow.
