Drawing inspiration from the popular blog Humans of New York, the New Amsterdam series takes a look at the lives, loves, and struggles of young New Yorkers. In this first installment, we meet Tess, owner of a boutique specializing in artisanal honey and other locally and organically sourced sundries. When she meets Levi, the owner of a rooftop gardening collective, there is an instant connection, but what unfolds is not your typical romance.

Throughout the book, coined as a petite novel, we’re introduced to an ensemble cast of characters that give life to a story full of depth and heart. Tess and Levi buck hipster stereotypes by embracing their roots; the family, friends, and circumstances that have shaped who they have become, without the unnecessary angst or entitlement that have become synonymous with Millennials. (Like the cynicism of the generation before them.) The story is endearing, the characters are relatable, and the result feels serendipitous.

While Tess is a standalone story, I highly suggest the books be read in order. If you’re familiar with Pullo’s work you know that she’s a master of weaving individual character’s lives in even the most abstract ways, creating stories within stories. For fans of her first series Discography, there’s even a nod to one of its supporting characters, which, if you loved the series as much as I did, it instantly brought a smile to my face. It’s Pullo’s use of those connections, coupled with her use of pop culture, both past and present, that make her stories not only easily relatable, but also make them transcend the genres of simply contemporary romance or Chick-Lit.

4 /2 stars, I adored this!!
My only complaint: I wish it was a full sized novel. Because this is one of those joyous read with a smile on your face kind of read, snorting at the witty infused humour. But, I know this is part 1 of 4, and more is to come soon.
I'm familiar with this author's other novels from the Discography series. This new series continues Ashley's poignant writing of New York. Intelligent, witty, heartfelt, likeable characters who are fleshed out and real. Secondary characters make a book for me, and I loved Seth and Meg! Thessaly and Levi, love love loved!!
This is a wonderful Gem of a novella, low on angst, yet high on character and fun. I highly recommend it for healing your heart in between angsty books. There may seem to be a history lesson at the start of the book. Read it, it's quite humorous, and sets the scene of New York. Then you get thrown into the gorgeousness of a sweet little honey and homemade jams shop, and it's motley crew of characters working there, trying to find their way in life. Charming, whimsical, humorous, sexy.

This book was so delightfully charming! I enjoyed the characters and the wonderful setting...New York, New York! Ashley Pullo just writes stories set in that city with such a special flavor. This series is actually dedicated to The Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton. I want to move this amazing city! This particular story involves the Big Apple AND some southern charm...my favorite kind of charm! There is great deal of energy and excitement plus a very sweet love story. Win Win Win. Tess and Levi...sigh. The dinner date...

The book is perhaps bon-bon sized; but, I was more than satisfied. I am very anxious to read the continuation of this series.

*ARC provided by the author for an honest review*

Thessaly Sinclair was a bit of a cliche. She followed a boy from Asheville, North Carolina, to New York City, only to find herself no longer the object of his affection. It turns out, though, that Thessaly loves the hustle and bustle of the city just as much as she loves Mason. She was also able to bring part of her home and history with her....honey.

Still holding out hope that Mason will come to his senses, Tess builds a life for herself on New York. A successful business selling her family farm’s jams and honeys at her shop, The Hive, and a tight-knit group of friends and employees. Everything is going according to her plan, until she bumps into a man with an ice cream cone, who turns her whole world upside down.

Levi Jones is a rooftop farmer; owner of Brooklyn Soil. He and Tess have farming, as well as an attraction to each other, in common. He was in the Peace Corps, he’s kind, and he’s completely swoon-worthy (“his hair is the color of candied pecans, and his eyes mimic the shade of Midnight blue from a box of Crayola crayons”)...but can Tess let go of a potential promised future with Mason to give Levi a chance?

Because Thessaly and Levi are simply characters within the bigger story- passing figures on crowded streets, assimilated residents of a vibrant city, and specks of color on a gray canvas.

Written in third person, Pullo writes with great wit and humor (“...rooftop bars are only as cool as their next hashtag”). Her characters, whether primary or secondary, are well-rounded and relatable. Tess, the first of the New Amsterdam series to be released, leaves you craving more of the stories of these “humans of New York.
