I love this gadget! I've been meaning to get into sous vide cooking for a couple of years, when my stepdaughter and her husband first started using the method. But they had to go through a lot of maker-style cobbling up of pieces and parts in order to do it,and I can't do a lot of "cobbling" these days. So I was waiting for a neat, self-contained solution that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

This immersion circulator is just the thing. Immersion heaters have been around for decades -- a metal (usually aluminum) coil on a little handle you dunked into a cup of water in a hotel room, plugged in, and it rapidly boils your water for tea or instant coffee. They're not the safest devices to use, though, because the old-style immersion heaters were just an exposed heating coil. This cooker is totally safe and simple to use. The immersion coil is inside a stainless-steel skirt, where it can't contact anything it might melt or burn. There are multiple thermocouple sensors around the coil,to monitor the temperature of the coil, and the temperature of the water it's immersed in from two separated points. In addition, there's a powerful but tiny circulating impeller -- like a small boat propeller -- pointing down. There's a movable cap at the bottom that redirects the flow from this little propeller, to move the hot water around in your cooking tub. It's very quiet, but there's still a sort of bubbling hum as it works.

It comes with a truly innovative double clamp, with one knob to clamp the clamp to your cooking vessel, and a second knob to secure the cooker in the clamp. It's good looking, durable, and holds the cooker rock-steady.

The cooker is about the size of a stick blender and about as easy to use.

This is a comparison review of the Anova Precision Cooker and the Nomiku Immersion Circulator. I have used both devices for a few months and even made the same dishes side-by-side to note any difference in the final meal.

Let me just do the benefits of each to start:

Pros of the Anova Precision Cooker:

• Better final fit and finish than the Nomiku. The Nomiku has a rotary dial (the Green ring around the top) that almost free-spins and feels somehow loose. Also, the LCD screen on the Nomiku is tiny and low resolution, as compared to the Anova which uses a Seven-segment display, but it just seems to be more well integrated and polished.
• Anova packaging is better (in my mind) – the packaging looks like a giant battery and it takes up little more space than the circulator itself as compared to the Nomiku which comes in a box with molded plastic that holds everything in place. Plus my daughter loves the foam cylinder that is part of the packaging. She wears it and pretends like it is a beard (see picture). This means every time I take the Anova out, she gets excited…which makes me happy.
• Bluetooth connectivity is nice, although it really just shows the temperature of the water/food. The way I use the Anova is pretty much to heat my water to what I want, then it cooks at that exact temperature for however long I want. There really isn’t anything I need to monitor. So while the Bluetooth is cool, it’s not like a cooking thermometer where you have to monitor the temperature of the meat over time. And with Sous Vide, you don’t really have to worry about overcooking, so to me the Bluetooth ability to monitor the water temperature really doesn’t matter.

My first sous vide cooker, decided to go with Anova based on how the company seem the most refined/mature in the non-professional sous-vide segment.
Overall quite happy, actually very happy with the purchase.
Using the cooker everyday.

Build quality is above average, almost excellent, for it's price.

Super easy to use.
Very nice and useful app (I'm using the Android version).

I recommend this cooker for beginners since this is a really nice learning tool for cooking.

Update 7/7:
After 3 weeks of almost daily use, my Anova Precision Cooker is broken.
Half of the upper case that's made of plastic has melted and deformed that the stainless steel sleeve won't attached properly now.
Waiting for resolution...

Resolved. Anova got me a new replacement unit. No out of pocket expenses from my end. Probably one of the best service experience I've gotten.
The replacement unit feels tighter and have gone through my 3 days of cooking burn-in test without any problems.

Got this direct from the company's website. Here are the pros and cons so far:
Pros:
-Great packaging and protection
-simple easy to use device; set the temperature and click start.
-basic easy to follow instruction manual
-when using correct cooking temperature for the food being prepared, food comes out PERFECT
-universal clamp can clamp onto most things that are less than 1" thick
-with sous vide in general, SUPER easy clean up

cons
-No official android app; although there are a few unofficial apps in the Play store. I just use a timer on my phone. [**UPDATED-THERE IS AN APP NOW**]
-clamp design could be better; I'm no design expert so I can't pinpoint why, but it could be better..
-power cord could be longer but it works for me.
-manual is pretty simple/basic; could have offered a basic temperature cooking guide for different foods, but it doesn't have anything like that. you can go to the website and they offer a guide there.

tips:
-im experimenting with different coolers (for better heat retention and less evaporation) to see which one will be my permanent water bath device; so far a 28 quart cooler is WAY too big, takes 15--20 minutes just to get temperature up to 138 for medium rare steak.
- I think a 12-16 quart cooler is the most efficient size; I'm waiting for it to deliver.
-finding cooking temperature and time guides can be seen on the company website

foods cooked so far:
-chicken breast boneless skinless - JUICIEST PLUMP chicken breasts ever!!! Fully cooked and no dry spots. I think this will be the only way i cook it now.
- Top round sirloin steak boneless - 138F @ 3 hours (1-4 hours for 1" cut) medium rare; wow amazing. every single bite!
