After doing some internet research on running shoes, I repeatedly came across positive reviews on the Zantes as one of the best options on the market. In the past, I have preferred to buy my running shoes in person at specialty stores where I can try the shoes on and run around a bit to get the proper feel for them. But typically I spend well over $100 when going that route, and with these shoes being on sale for less than $60 on Amazon, I decided to roll the dice.
In the past I had usually opted for Brooks for my running shoes, but I had often went with New Balance shoes to wear to the gym or just out and about when I want something comfortable to wear. I purchased the Zantes in a 13 D and found they fit just like any other New Balance shoe I had went with in the past (which was pretty much expected).
After one run in these shoes, I wasn't sold, but after a few weeks I found the Zantes to be just about perfect. I know the expression "like running on air" often gets thrown around by runners, but these really felt like that. The comfort level was excellent. And for a bigger guy (I'm 6-2 and about 225 pounds), having a comfortable shoe to run in is vitally important for keeping my feet in good shape.
The biggest complaints I've seen online for this shoe are that it can be tight for some in the mid-foot area (not a problem I've experienced), isn't as
"fast" as some would like (the V2 are an ounce heavier than the first version of this particular model -- I do agree that it's probably a better training shoe than a pure competitive "racing" shoe, which it claims to be) and that there are durability issues with this model (I have about 100 miles in on mine and have had no issues to date).
All told, this is a phenomenal neutral running shoe if you're in the market for a reasonably-priced model to work in on your daily jog. Although New Balance has released an updated V3 model for the Fresh Foam Zante, I'm going to try and stick with the V2 model (if possible) when it comes time to replace these bad boys. They are just that good.
