If you have marginal arches, these are NOT the inserts for you.
They DO make it feel like you're walking on wrestling mats which is nice.
EDIT: OK, I got to a point where I couldn't handle the extra height these added to the inside of the shoe and the VERY aggressive arches were never painful, but annoying. Soo... I ended up getting Vionic insoles and OMG I'M IN LOVE! I bought 1 pair and loved them so much I bought 2 more pair. Vionic aren't nearly as cushy as these, but I also don't feel like I'm sitting on my shoes. With the Vionic, I feel like I'm IN my shoe.
If you have or have had plantar facetious, look into Vionic with Ortha Heel. I won't own anything else!
The insoles are made with two layers of cushioning foam, a dense red layer and a softer black one. The insoles are .25" thick at the ball of the foot. The heel cup is deep. The mid-foot is a shaped, raised support. Additionally, the heel and mid-foot area are supported with a flexible.but stiff piece of plastic which strengthens the insole and helps it hold its shape. The top of the insole is covered in a blue knit fabric.
These are rather hefty insoles, best used in work boots or shoes that are a half size larger than your normal size.
This product is designed for all types of activities. The cushion is significant, and I would describe the firmness as medium soft.
Many reviewers described the arch support as high and supportive. The picture is not totally obvious but the arch support is in the MIDDLE of the foot. Anatomically your arch height is greatest at the medial side of your foot. This insole has an arch that peaks in the middle of your foot. It is weird. However it is not bad as bad as it sounds. It's actually pretty comfortable as an everyday insole. The cushioning is enough that the ball of my foot doesn't hurt when I squat down, which is pretty good.
For me the arch support is sufficient to prevent plantar fasciitis, but if you have already torn your plantar fascia, you will need something else. To treat plantar fasciitis caused by high arches, I would recommend Archcrafters custom insoles and Orthaheel flip flops to wear around the house and anytime you want open-toe shoe.
For maximum impact protection, I would recommend Sorbothane Classic Insole. But that has no structure to it; it's just a floppy piece of black gel.
This New Balance IUSA 3810 is a good all-around insole for those with slightly high arches and not currently experiencing an arch problem. Some may find the arch lump in the middle of the foot annoying.
