I like the look of these, and the support is definitely there. In fact, I think these are pretty great shoes, with one caveat: they don't breathe terribly well. On the plus side, I they should be more water resistant than my mesh shoes, but (obviously) they don't ventilate my feet as much. This isn't a flaw with the shoes; they are as they are meant to be, but I feel this is something buyers should know. There are not any ventilation holes, and while the tongue is mesh, it becomes bunched and isn't reliable for air-flow.
They fit as I expected, which is not always the case with New Balance shoes. I have purchased several pair of 940v2 shoes, and these fit just like those.
The material is thin, but nice and appears to be durable. I'm also happy that I can buy a show that doesn't look like a nurse's show, or a spaceship. Thanks, NB!
Original review: I've been wearing this particular shoe for a lot of years. I wear them every day and usually wear them out in a couple of years. No running, I just wear them all the time. I wear the most recent pair to work and keep a previous pair or two around for working in the yard and such. I've always liked these because I could get them in a 12 4E (I'm a big guy) and they had a nice, high arch support. I usually buy them at a local athletic store but most of them near me have closed in the last few years. That was okay since the shoes are dependable and I can continue to buy them on Amazon.
Pros: A good shoe, comfortable, fit as expected, feels like I can wear it my usual couple of years.
Cons: Price. Every update has gotten more expensive to the point where it may have exceeded what I think is reasonable. The entire upper seems thinner and has less pad than before. Maybe better materials, maybe just cheaper and won't last as long. Time will tell. The big issue is the arch support is gone. It has an almost completely flat insert.
The arch support is a deal breaker. Now, I can always buy a different set of inserts. In fact, New Balance makes them. But, add that expense to the fact that the shoe is already expensive and I may be looking around for a different pair of shoes next time.
In years past I would have given the shoes five stars. I'm going to knock a couple off for the price and the arch support issue. I'll come back and revisit this after I've worn them a few months.
I generally wear a 15B in dress shoes but go up a size to 16B in athletic footwear. This pair fit me perfectly with a little toe room to prevent me from jamming my toes against the front while power walking.
Very happy with this purchase.
