This book focuses on Breed history and development in the United States, the AKC official standard (and discussion about the "ideal" dog), conformation showing, obedience training and showing (for competition obedience, not for every-day walking around without getting pulled), tracking, carting, ethical breeding, puppy development, and a brief chapter on nutrition. I am a person who shows dogs in general, and I find this book very valuable.
I really like the illustrated interpretation of the AKC conformation standards. It helps to visualize what is looked for, and gives a judge or exhibitor a good "refresher"... This book does have lots of black and white pictures, but I think it helps to get a good sense of what they should look like. I appreciate the author's commentary on proper temperament, and what kind of dog this breed is as a whole.
If you are looking for obedience training for Bernese Mountain Dogs, I highly suggest the techniques of any of the Volhard trainers. If you like the "clicker training" Karen Pryor is a decent author. Other general obedience book recommendations are "so your dog's not lassie" and "playtraining your dog"- both are older, but full of information that is very useful. (There is no "one size fits all" approach to dog training, so be sure to tailor your training to your dog's needs!)
This book has techniques that focus on successive approximation. If you're not familiar with the work of B.F. Skinner, you might not fully understand what is going on, or be confident enough with this technique. That is basically how this author suggests to train these dogs, as they can be stubborn.
Even if you just want one as a pet...
In the nutrition section, the author does discuss some of the health issues this breed is faced with. I strongly suggest reading through this, then asking your vet how much treatment is for each of these conditions. :) That will really help you understand if you are ready for one of these amazing dogs.
This book is written as a comprehensive study on Berners, and includes superb information for breeders and exhibitors.
Newbies or people who are not hardcore Berner people may want to avoid this book because they'll probably find a lot of the information overwhelming and unnecessary.
But for people who want a great in-depth perspective on the Bernese Mtn Dog Breed, this book is a MUST HAVE. As a breeder, and as an exhibitor, I use it often as a research resource.
If you're a newer PET Berner owner, try beginning with a book more geared toward newbies in the breed like Julia Crawford's Owner's Guide to a Healthy, Happy Pet.
