Stemp teaches children that everyone is different. That even in the most different of souls lives something relatable. He reminds us that patience and perseverance are two of the main ingredients when making (and keeping) a friendship.
Stemp and Soelver are a team to watch out for. I have a feeling many more of their books will be gracing the shelves of children’s rooms across the world in very short order.

A fantastic kid's book. Really! The ideal length for a bedtime story, or for that matter an anytime story. My five year old loved this story and demanded that I "READ IT AGAIN!" twice.
What makes this book effective is the use of both narrative AND illustration. Not only are the illustrations appropriate to what's going on in the narrative (which seems like such a small thing, but there are a lot of books out there where the pictures don't tie to the text on that page), but in one point the illustration *tells* the story in the absence of words. It's near the end, when Cat happens upon the "new cat" (that's to say, a dog) sleeping in her spot. The scene advances the story elegantly and imaginatively.
The text is very well written, as well as being age-appropriate and not at all patronizing or condescending to the young reader (or listener).
Really - this book is a gem. Outstanding work and I hope not the last we'll hear from the team of Stemp and Soelver.
I have 2 (tiny) issues with this book:
1) My kids are still young enough where they're in that stage of naming everything they see ("Look! Dog! What that? Kitty?" Having the dog be referred to as "New Cat" confused them and there's no explanation in the story, so I had to stop reading and spend time explaining everything to them; yes, it is a dog, but the kitty doesn't know what a dog is, so she thinks he's a a new cat.
2) The ending confused them because they're too young to make the connection that the fact they both love sleeping in the sunshine is the thing they have in common so they can be best friends. Yes, it gave me a chance to discuss the story with them and teach them how to make that connection, it ended the book kind of abruptly for them.
That said, my kids love the book :-)
He loved to play with his catnip ball, chasing shadows and eating canned fish for dinner. She also loved to lay in the sun on her favourite place.
One day his family brought another cat into the house. and that Cat did everything wrong for her. He didn't like playing with the catnip all, he liked other things.
Cat was surprized if they could ever be friends and find some common ground. She found it as they laid together in the sun. Cat was very happy so was the new Cat (Dog).
A delightful book for children to learn sharing. Very imaginative with fantastic drawings to the great text.

Cat is the queen of her castle. She loves playing with her catnip ball, chasing shadows, and eating fish - and most of all, taking catnaps in the sunshine through the kitchen window. Everything changed when Cat's family brought home a present - a NEW CAT!!!!!! The new cat was friendly and Cat plays with her catnip ball, trying to share it with new cat. But new cat sniffed the catnip ball, was disinterested, and played with chewed on rope instead. Cat doesn't understand their differences, offers new cat some of her fish food, but new cat jut sniffed and preferred a bowl of hard pellets - another surprise and disappointment for Cat. Cat tries to figure out the reasons new cat has different interests until she looks out a window and sees her family walking new cat on a rope. When the family gets home Cat naps in her sunshine then goes downstairs and new cat is napping in her kitchen sunshine spot, and thinking that if only they had one thing in common they could be friends - like taking a nap together in the kitchen favorite spot.
A cute story (of course new cat is a pup) that will entertain children as they discover the secret Cat doesn't appreciate until the end. Excellent illustrations and clever (and instructive) story from Patrick and Anita and Frogburps. Grady Harp, May 15
This book is beautifully illustrated and well written and an enjoyable read for children. Children will learn that differences are not important when it comes to friendship. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
