New Delta Rising Hardcover – Illustrated, December 19, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
The Mississippi Delta has been called “the most southern place on earth.” This fertile expanse of flat land sprawls along the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, southward to Vicksburg, Mississippi. Culturally rich as well, the Delta is the land where the blues began.
New Delta Rising is an exploration of Mississippi Delta life and a celebration of the indefatigable Delta people who live there.
Award-winning photographer Magdalena Solé spent a year interviewing and photographing hundreds of residents in the Mississippi Delta. The deep connection she felt comes through in the compelling images in this book. Solé captures their personal dignity, resilience, and resourcefulness, along with the closeness of family and community she found among them.
The accompanying text gives voice to the people of the Delta, illuminating their strength and character and spirit―a spirit bound up in a deeply rooted sense of place and shown in their compassion for one another. In their stories the people of the Delta have much to offer to the rest of the United States.
Rick Bragg, the acclaimed author of All Over but the Shoutin', contributes to the volume a lyrical essay evoking the distinctive aura of the Mississippi Delta. He writes, “Myth and magic and legend swirl into the real world, and it can be hard to tell where one stops and the other begins.”

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2012This is a somewhat anomalous book, for it is foremost a book of magnificent color photographs taken in one of the most poverty-stricken, forlorn regions of the United States. The region is the Delta of Mississippi, on the eastern side of the Mississippi River between Vicksburg and Memphis, home of cotton plantations and the heartland - many say the birthplace - of the Blues.
Magdalena Solé is a gifted photographer, with a fine eye and a rare ability to unobtrusively ease her way into the lives of her subjects and their surroundings. NEW DELTA RISING contains over one hundred photographs, all in color and in most that color is rich and glorious. In stark contrast, the subjects of the photographs are anything but rich and glorious. In the poker game of life, they have been dealt hands of unpaired, mixed suit, spot cards. They live in a world of trailer homes and ramshackle houses, peeling paint and corrugated tin siding, pool halls and laundromats. Again and again, the photographs prompt the question: How can such visually lush photographs be from a region with so little?
At the same time, the book clearly seeks to communicate an upbeat message of hope and potential. It is published by The Dreyfus Health Foundation and The Rogosin Institute, two not-for-profit organizations dedicated to improving health and the quality of life that, apparently, sponsor programs in the Delta. The last section of the book consists of profiles of sixteen Delta residents who exemplify resilience and determination, and, collectively, provide some reason to believe, a propos of the book's title, that there might truly be a "new Delta rising".
But the Delta residents will have to do it pretty much on their own. Those in political and financial power in this country aren't likely to provide much help in the foreseeable future. Still, in the interest of Americans better knowing their fellow Americans, it can't hurt for books like this to be circulated widely. I hope the sale of NEW DELTA RISING exceeds all expectations.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2015This is at once a visual feast and a document of a region mired in poverty since the Civil War. Magdalena Sole has the eye of a poet, which shines through in images both colorful and disconcerting. That she treats her subjects as equals is evident in the natural feel of the photographs, even the few that are "posed". There's no exploitation here, as is often a danger in the coverage of disparate lives. There are numerous documentary collections focused on the people of Mississippi, and all that I've seen and own are excellent. This one is a standout, an essential for any serious collection. Those who appreciate the skill of a great photographer with a healthy dose of social commentary will want to own this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2017Excellent printing and binding. I know many of the photos' locations. Several of them were taken here in my home town. My interest in what others are doing in the arts, motion pictures (now videos) and photography is because that's how I make a living.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2020Bought this book for my husband as a gift. It was written about his grandfather.
