Everybody is entitled to their opinion...mine is a little more favorable than the other reviewer...although I agree the production could have been a lot better and takes away from some potentially good songs.

I do like a lot of the stuff on this album...it's not all great but it's certainly not bad either. I really like songs like Share Your Energy...it reminds me a lot of Pagan's Mind and that's a good thing...the death vocals are in the background of the chorus but the clean voice is way more upfront...no big deal there. I also love the middle eastern sounding Kingdom Of Sand it has a great groove to it. Your Desire is probably the heaviest song on the disc and has those Vicious Rumor, Annihilator kind of harmony guitars but seems a little out of place on this disc...good song just kind of messes with the flow.

As far as the guitars I can hear them just fine although they aren't super crunchy or upfront in your face...the rhythm section especially the drums are way up front...and for sure the rhythm guitar sound could use some fattening up and maybe could of been a bit more crunchy...I don't have any problems with the solo's either the guys tone is good and he can rip...but the CD just isn't loaded with solos.

So IMO it's not their best album by a long shot...but it's not terrible either I'd give it 3 1/2 stars but Amazon's system doesn't let you give 1/2's so I'll round it off to 4...lets hope the band pays a little bit more attention on the production on the next CD.

After their mediocre previous album Global Drama, three of the five members of Cloudscape left the band. Needless to say, I was worried their 'new era' would fall short off the mark. I've always considered their second album, Crimson Skies, their best: it beautifully merged the band's melodic metal sensibilities with subtle progressive overtones without slipping into cheesiness.

New Era sees vocalist Mike Andersson and guitarist Patrik Svard shedding their formidable songwriting vision that was marked by highly nuanced, complex arrangements and hook-laden vocals in favour of simpler and shorter tunes. There is a distinct effort to write catchier and more accessible tunes with a very modern slant to it. The song "Share Your Energy" even boasts some metalcore type of backing vocals which actually detract from the composition rather than contribute to it. "Kingdom of Sand" consists of industrial sound effects with awful pop vocals and watery guitar leads. The guitars no longer cut through the mix as they used to; the riffs are puny and lifeless. Vocals are delivered in a very direct manner, gone are the piercing screams balanced by clean and throaty vocal passages. Andersson actually sounds like he delivers the verses in a boring monotone. The choruses that defined this band's sound are gone, and the instrumental parts sound terribly weak, especially the guitar leads. When the vocals do hit centre-stage on songs like "Seen It All Before" or "Your Desire," they sound so different not even a die-hard fan would know it's the same band that wrote and released their prior work.

Cloudscape's new album is awesome, they are growing more and more as musicians and the music has grown and gotten more mature, it is one of the top albums of the year.
