In many parts of the tropics, intensive, export-oriented monocropping has destroyed both local self-sufficiency and biologically rich and stable environments. The rehabilitation of these savanna regions - as yet relatively neglected by environmentalists - is vital for the success of any strategy for sustainable development. This study focuses on just such a district in Ghana and uncovers the complex factors responsible for environmental degradation.
