My review is based on a pre-publication version of Putnam's new grammar. Putnam's grammar is well designed for learning. After three lessons on reading and pronouncing, lessons on nouns and other parts of speech are interspersed with lessons on the forms of the Qal strong (fourteen lessons in this section). The third section includes fourteen lessons, primarily concerning stems (binyanim) and "weak roots," which are interspersed with lessons on "basic tools," Masora, and simple, yet valuable, guidelines for reading narratives using recent discourse approaches. The end of the book includes the conventional assortment of vocabulary lists, glossary, and paradigms found in most learning grammars. The strength of the grammar is its attention to linguistic function throughout, helping the student learn to read beyond the confines of "the phrase" and "the sentence" in isolation, characteristic of most learning grammars. This is a first-rate learning grammar and worthy of consideration for replacing a textbook with which you are not thrilled.

In the interests of full disclosure, several years ago I studied with Dr. Putnam while a student at Biblical Seminary (where he was teaching at the time), using earlier "drafts" of this book. Languages are not my strength, but the book was understandable, useful, and did it's job. As prior reviewers have noted, the stye and approach (discourse analysis) of this book are practical, effective and consistently points the student to understanding the biblical text, not simply the more basic elements of the language. I will purchase this version and update/create a fuller review at that time, but unless it has been drastically changed for the worse, you will not go wrong by purchasing this grammar.

I'd used this instructional book to learn Hebrew at Biblical Seminary and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I am terrible in learning new languages, but this book and the way it is organized is excellent. I would definitely recommend this book if you are interested in learning Hebrew.
