Megan Anderson is managing the High Grove Animal Shelter while Wes, the founder of the no-kill shelter, is recovering from heart surgery. She's passionate about the animals at the shelter, which is filled to capacity and always looking for grant money or donations so they can keep their doors open.
When wealthy Craig Williams, owner of a large marketing company, comes into the shelter to drop off his daughter's new puppy, Megan doesn't take into account that there might be extenuating circumstances but lashes out at him.
Craig's divorce is almost finalized and he and his ex-wife and two young children have been through a death in the family, are selling the family home, and have decided the puppy is just too much for right now.
I like how author Burns packed a lot of good information about animal shelters and abandoned pets into this story and still was able to make it an entertaining, romantic tale.
I like that there was substance to the story and some tough issues were written about - divorce, children of divorce, family dynamics, and more, along with a lot about pet adoptions.
This was a funny, yet serious, heartwarming and touching romance - just the book I was hoping for.
I received this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca through Edelweiss in exchange for my unbiased review.
Craig is going just divorced, dealing with the death of one of his twin sons and working hard to help his two remaining children cope with the loss of their brother. The story is full of emotion, how different people deal with the loss of a loved one. I loved the way the two other children had such different reactions to the death of their brother and the understanding and patience it took to help them learn to live with the loss. This is a very well-written story that also covered the way different adult people emotional reactions to the problems of life. The humor and witty conversations added some extra spice to the plot to keep it fun. The animals were a big part of the plot with the way their individual personalities came through to bring out the best in the people helping to save them and find new homes and owners for them to fit them.
I want to thank Debbie Burns, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the copy of A New Leash on Love that I won in the Giveaway.
Craig isn’t happy about it, but he brings in his daughter’s puppy for surrender the same day an ice storm arrives in St. Louis. Reflecting his current state of mind, he manages to make a first impression less welcome than the weather.
With the help of Craig’s children, plus a fine assortment of characters at the shelter – human, canine, and feline – the ice melts between this couple that the reader is rooting for from that first frosty meeting.
Ms. Burns has written a delightful story with plenty of action, twists, and turns to keep the pages turning into the night.
