This book outlines Dante's life, as one would expect of a biography, but also helps put it in context by explaining something of the political world in which he moved. It also has commentary on the Divine Comedy, which I am reading together with a book containing only commentary and the work itself as part of my Great Courses reading of the work. I am finally appreciating the Comedy, which I got nothing out of the first time I read it because I had no explanation of who the people were that he met up with in his journey from Hell to Paradise.
