Review for New London by J.G. MacLeod
You never know what to expect from the talented author MacLeod. I thought I might be getting a sedate lyrical romantic third in the series ending for Lady Ellen books. That turned out wrong. Though the book has a slow start with the pregnant with 3rd child Lady Ellen beginning a new life in the dangerous Ontario, Canada frontier with her noble husband, it rapidly moves into a maelstrom of terror in a tale of revenge and retribution through a former nemesis. Lady Ellen is sent through the flaming hoops of injustice and all the while with child, and her three others in tow. Yikes. Oh sure the book is filled with love triangles, the trademark domestic Taming of the Shrew amusing male/female dialogue, but this time Lady Ellen is going to get dirty in a much darker tale. This reminded me of the old serials of the 20s-30s, and could be parody titled, ‘The Perils of Pauline Whilst Proceeding Pregnant.’ This time around she throws odd characters at us like snarky ladies of the night, a spooky gypsy fortuneteller, and an all business Indian healer. After a grave tragedy, Lady Ellen is forced into becoming a victim of nefarious conspiracy. Terrors! Watch for a poignant moment of note with a remarkable Christmas miracle so well depicted. Truly, there are more twists and turns in this one than MC Hammer with hammerpants full of Brazilian fire ants. There is a harried escape. A healing from PTSD that is examined quite well. We see justice in all its glory. This 3rd in the series is filled with characters that represent well, yet have ulterior motives, and the story shows well what happens to people with such motives. The book is also laced with comedic spots of relief, notable is a terrifically amusing scene where Lady Ellen learns to cook for the first time (think Scarlett O’Hara on the Porky Pig acid from 1977). At last an endearing close to the series, with a reveal into the elaborate path of God’s serendipity. The truth is we often don’t have to be very old to look at the patterns of where and why things happen to see the hand of God moving us through life.
