I enjoyed this DVD. Always enjoy Jim Garner.

I had purchased the original Maverick complete series through a link to TV Ruby on Amazon, since Amazon didn't have it. I was disappointed with that box set because 9 of 25 disks were unusable. Some episodes were duplicated, and one disk was for the Practice instead of Maverick. The quality of TV Ruby's shows was often poor. Also, none of the disks were usable after the first viewing. They have not responded to my complaints. So don't use TV Ruby if you want a good product.

What a joy it was to see James Garner return to the role that made him famous! The character has aged like fine wine and the sharp Garner tongue is still firmly planted in the cheek. I agree only in part with the other reviewers - we do want to see the original Maverick on DVD! But this will serve as a nice appetizer until the main course comes along. And personally I can't see reviewing a product that you have not bothered to take the time to watch.

Faces were recognizable during close-ups, but long-distance shots were way too blurry to identify any character. …Places where it was necessary to read a poster of some sort, the printing was soooo blurry, it was impossible to read. …Returned for refund. Decided a replacement might be just as awful.

Even though there was one main plot, there really were two different story lines going on. The one between the "real" Maverick (Bret/James Garner) and Poker Alice (Susan Sullivan - who is based on a real woman) was fantastic! Their characters had real depth and humour. Plus, the stellar acting of them both really jumped off the screen, especially in comparison to the other main characters. They even built up more passion and fire between them without even sharing a touch or kiss compared to the other "love" story which had quite a few kisses. Which is kind of strange seeing how the actors with the lackluster passion were actually married in real life - lol.

So, in my opinion, half of the movie was great. I know the reason Ben Maverick (Charles Frank) got 50% of the story was because one of the main focuses of the movie was to generate interest in the upcoming spin-off "Young Maverick" with Frank in the lead. Which makes his very poor acting even more shocking. Not surprisingly, the series was cancelled almost immediately.

One small director flaw was that there was no background music throughout the show. Very strange choice. Left a few scenes a little empty that didn't have to be. But, that's just my opinion.

Overall, it's definitely worth watching. Seeing James Garner as Bret Maverick again makes it all worth while :)
