The layout is especially nice: The Bible is interspersed with writings by some of the "greats" (and some of the "not so greats" such as Rick Warren who preaches the Big Box Theology) but I love how it's all in call-out boxes so you don't mistake it for the Biblical text. There are also highlighted verses at different points, which emphasize what the editors think are of great importance and areas that encourage self-examination and further study.
I DO recommend the hardcover - it's durable and looks like it will last a lifetime, which is more important to me than anything else.
