War James Kent alias Perturbator bisher immer einer der etwas düsteren Vertreter des Synthwave-Genres, das für Neonfarben und 80er-Jahre-Feeling bekannt ist, so verabschiedet er sich auf "New Model" endgültig von cheesigen Wohlfühl-Klängen. Stattdessen sind die sechs größtenteils überlangen Tracks (die Gesamtspielzeit liegt bei fast 35 Minuten, somit ist "New Model entweder ein kurzes Album oder eine lange EP) vor allem eines: düster - wie schon das Cover-Artwork andeutet. Kent verwendet Elemente aus Wave, EBM und anderen Electro-Stilen, das Ergebnis balanciert zwischen modern und retro. Besonders spannend ist, dass die Lieder alles andere als monoton sind: Kein Part wird so lange verwendet, bis er langweilig zu werden droht, auch gibt es kaum wiederkehrende Teile in den Songs. Da fließt ein harter Part mit hämmernden Beats auch mal in sanfte Klänge über, ohne dass es auch nur annähernd wie ein Bruch wirkt. Überhaupt sind alle sechs Stücke miteinander verknüpft, wodurch "New Model" wie der Soundtrack zu einem dystopischen Sci-Fi-Film wirkt. Auch vor Tempowechseln schreckt Kent nicht zurück, und mittendrin lockert "Vantablack" als einziges Stück mit Gesang die Sache auf. "New Model" zeigt, wie interessant, progressiv und zugleich finster rein elektronische Musik sein kann. Dafür sind ganze fünf Sterne angebracht.

Étant une fervente amatrice des œuvres du sieur James Kent, j'attendais son nouvel album de pied ferme. Celui-ci s'inscrit dans la lignée de son prédécesseur, The Uncanny Valley, avec toutefois une démarche renouvelée (ce n'est pas un bis repetita du précédent exercice) et des sonorités plus "modernes" (tout en restant dans un esprit rétro). Mis a part un titre, Vantablack, tout est instrumental. L'ambiance est sombre et onirique, et comment ne pas penser à Vangelis (et à la B.O. de Blade Runner, notamment) à l'écoute de ces longues nappes de synthé. La transition entre "Tainted Empire" and "Corrupted by Design", véritable apogée de l'album, est absolument délectable, surtout si vous disposez d'un sound system muni de bonnes basses. Ce véritable voyage sonore rétro-futuriste se clôt magistralement sur "God Complex", un morceau à l'ambiance majestueuse d'une grande beauté, à l'instar de celui, éponyme, qui clôturait The Uncanny Valley. Bref, un album qui va conquérir les fans du genre (Carpenter Brut, Lazerhawk, Megadrive et autres Dance With The Dead), mais susceptible de toucher un public plus large, des adeptes de Jean-Michel Jarre jusqu'aux amateurs de black metal :)

Düster und energiereich kommen die Tracks daher. Wer auf Synthwave mit etwas mehr Tempo und Aggressivität steht, ist hier goldrichtig. Abwechslungsreich und innovativ, von Anfang bis zum Ende. Etwas kurz ist die Gesamtlauflänge, aber dennoch lange genug, um keinen Abzug zu bekommen.
