The bible is a GREAT BOOK to be sure! This 4th edition version is the most "in- depth", annotated study bible that I have found. The background notes, and the translation notes are excellent! It has a concordance, tables, charts and maps. It was recommended to me by a professor of religious studies and also a bible scholar.

The book itself was sold as a used book (at half price) but it was brand new with a couple of creased end pages that did not detract from the edition at all. The supple brown leather binding is top notch! It has thumprint indices with gold print on black labels which makes it so easy to use. The print is large enough to read without my glasses even though it is not a "large print" version. I use it for classes twice a week and for reference, as well as devotion. Thank you Amazon.

Probably the best scholarly Bible in English. Full of scholarly footnotes, inserts, and excellent articles on the history of biblical initerpretation througout history. It is based on the New Revised Standard Version manuscripts published this century. This is a Bible for serious biblical students, pastors, and dedicated laypersons desiring to expand their historiccal, social, and geopolitical understandings of the cultural melieu in which the text were written and later translated into modern English. Includes timelines, tables of historical rulers and events paralleling biblical narratives, a number of maps of the Holy Land, a very good glossary and an excellent Concordence to look up scriptural texts on important theological ideas both in the Hebrew and in the Christian Scriptures. Also includes the Apocrypa, the "between the Canons source materials" that were not included in either the Hebrew nor the Christian Canons but have significant insight into later theological apocryphal and revelatory sources dealiing with the after life, resurrection of the dead, and other messianic prophecies that existed prior to and during the formation of the Christian Canon.

I love the Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha. It includes amazing footnotes, maps, and if anyone has questions as to the meaning of what they are reading, it is to be found in the footnotes. I also love how the Bible contains great introductions to books, explaining there interpretation, status in the Bible, this is very interesting especially in the Apocryphal books. This is one of the few Bibles I know of that include all of the books accepted by Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles as well in the apocryphal section ( Most only include Catholic books),this Bible has 1 and 2 Esdras, 3 and 4 Maccabees, and Prayer of Mannesah. and explains why certain books are only in certain sects of Christianity. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is seeking to understand the Bible in an unbiased way, there is critical examinations of the books, and history of the books and how modern scholars interpret it.

To begin with, I'm not a huge fan of the NRSV. I prefer the RSV or NAB for clarity of language and meaning. Often the way certain verses are translated is convoluted and difficult to understand. More than once while reading this NRSV, I've gotten up to consult the RSV and then understand the passage. Frequently, the issue comes down to choices of meaning in certain Greek words. I seem to only encounter this in the New Testament. Generally, the Old Testament is fine.

However, I'm not reviewing the NRSV, but rather the "New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha" (forth edition)--which I like very much in general. The notes and commentary are helpful and often highlight cultural details that previous editions did not. This is particularly true in the Old Testament. The charts, maps and essays are very good. I especially enjoy that there are plentiful maps on the pages wherein they would be helpful, for instance, a map that shows the various potential Exodus routes.

The quality of the book are okay. I would say that the typeface is a little less readable than other books. The binding seems sturdy, but the thiness of the pages, makes this Bible overall fragile. I'm very careful when turning pages, lest one rip.

It's worth the money, if you like the NRSV. I use it primarily for the essays, notes and commentaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars ¡Y el padre Raymond E. Brown tenía la razón!
Reviewed in Mexico on June 5, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly rigor at a bargain price
Reviewed in Germany on June 24, 2014
This is a very fine publication, at least to my (as yet) lay eyes. Sure enough, the pages are butterfly-wing thin, but that's not a problem at all, and the text is very readable. I did find two small errors during the first hours I spent with the book, but nothing major. I think at this price, we are given a whole lot of scholarly rigor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exxcellent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2014
NRSV is a reasonable modern translation though perhaps not the best being tied as it is to the KJV. This edition has a simple approach to its annotations giving separately short comments on the translation where these are problematical and longer items to assist with background. The approach is to treat the work as a work of ancient literature and to deal with it in no different manner from say Homer or whomever. There is a pleasing absence of any religion in the annotations. If the reader wishes to understand in a realistic, practical manner what the bible is as opposed to what assorted contending religionists believe it to be or wish it to be then this edition is ideal. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent NRSV Bible With very Worthwhile Notes, Maps, Short Concordance and Comments
Reviewed in Canada on July 11, 2012
This is an excellent NRSV study Bible which is of the high quality one typically expects from Oxford University Press.

I'm very happy with my copy and refer to it regularly; it has very readable text, some useful maps, a useful (but short) concordance, and very informative notes which appear on the same pages as the verses they refer to so you don't have to constantly flip back and forth between the text and the notes.

I see there are some major critiques of this edition put forward by other reviewers. These are worth addressing, so here goes:

1./ "Text is too small." I don't find that at all; the size of the text is fine for me.

2./ "It's printed on paper that is too thin and crumples easily." This edition is printed on a fairly thin paper stock. I don't find this a problem but I can see how others might.

3. Some comments refer to a "leather binding." I'm not sure where that comes from. The version I have is a sturdy hard cover binding but it isn't leather.

Overall, this is a very worthwhile edition of the NRSV Bible. I'm very satisfied with my copy.
