I have read this book cover to cover a half dozen times. I flip the ears over on the corners of the important pages. For the first 60 pages there are a few corners flipped here and there. From page 60 to 176 nearly every page has the corner flipped. Powerful stuff. It's actually a transcript of the man speaking to an audience. Aimed at alcoholics, I recommend anyone read this book and replace the word "alcohol" with "ego" and "drinking" with "thinking" and "alcoholic" with "egoholic" to get the "GOLD" inside these pages. The trick for acoholic/addicts as well as anyone else is to read ("listen") from the "heart", not the "head" (mind) :-) I now carry this book in my car and use it as a "reference manual", knowing exactly where to find the part I am looking for regarding whatever issue may be "up" for me in that moment. Bless yourself with this wonderful gift and "be open" :-)

There are some amazing nuggets of wisdom and thinking here such as, "It is the set of the sail, and not the gale, that determines where it goes," and "Be good for nothing. That's the fun deal, just to be good for nothing," and "Love equals action."
This book will cause you to think seriously about matters you may have thought you had all figured out before. It can be a little confusing and seemingly contradictory, which is why I gave it 4-stars instead of 5.
But Chuck "C" was clearly a very flawed, charismatic individual who also possessed some amazing qualities and stands out as as man who utterly devoted his life to helping other alkies set themselves free with the help of their Higher Powers and a "passionate. spontaneous. helpful" approach to life.
This is a book you need to study and not just read. It will make you think about your life in ways that you don't expect.

I am in my Masters of Counseling program and one of my classes was Substance Abuse Disorders. A part of our homework was to find a AA group and write a reflective paper on our experience. Well this book was used that night and though I have never had issues with substance abuse it was powerful. It deals with more than just the issues with Alcoholism it can be applied to all parts of our lives! Very Good book!

I chose this copy of a New Pair of Glasses based on the photos. It appears that this copy would come with a special box, when in fact, it is just a used book. I purchased it as a gift, so I'm not going to ask them to go to the trouble of returning it, but I could have paid half the price for what was received

Chuck C. goes beyond the usual 12-step talk. If you haven't listened to the audios of the original talks this book is based on, those will really help to get the spirit of what is transcribed in this book. If you can both listen to the audio and read the book, that's the way to go. I love having the book to refer back to and read as part of my program. I wish I would have heard Chuck C. a long time ago. His views on spirituality / the higher power are what make this really revolutionary in my opinion. No wonder this book has so many copies in print and the audio talk remains in the same class as Joe and Charlie, a must-hear for the "tongue chewing babbling drunk" as Chuck C. describes himself upon arrival at AA. Chuck C. didn't just talk, he used the ideas in this book to transform himself from that "tongue chewing babbling drunk" into a man who was contended, useful to his fellows, and focused on the act of loving others.

Chuck C. is my all-time favorite as an Alcoholics Anonymous speaker and representative of what recovery can achieve. This book was derived from a conference he spoke at not long before he passed away, and it is a jewel for anyone wanting to hear the message of recovery in a loving and benevolent way. Many passages touched me to the very core, and I pick it up as often as I pick up the Big Book itself.

This is an excellent book that changed the way I think about the most important any of us have--our relationship with God.I now understand how to pray. Up until I read that book, I prayed for and expected very specific things. That isn't what we are called to do.
While the book is written for people in the AA program, it's message about prayer applies to everyone.

What a fantastic book. So full of practical helpful things. It's an amazing book. The audio is available on youtube for free. After all this book is a transcript of a meeting. His thoughts are so organized though that it reads nicely. I love it.

I'm in a 12-step fellowship and I'm always looking out for the best supporting literature. This one is gold dust. Chuck C is a brilliant speaker and this is a transcript of his finest 'share'. It's extremely easy to read, but very profound and moving. There are stories and insights which help with that trickiest of subjects: the art of living. He explains how it's not enough to read about the 12-steps, you've got to put them into action.
You can listen to recordings on the internet, but there's extra value in seeing the words on the page. I finished it in a couple of days.

A New Perspective
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 1, 2014Verified Purchase
Chuck Chamberlain was an alcoholic who sought and found recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous. This book documents a talk he gave to fellow alcoholics and AA members in 1975 at the Pala Messa Retreat. The account is inspiring and provides hope of a new life to all those who suffer from the disease of alcoholism. The title 'A New Pair of Glasses' refers to the new perspective on life Chuck C gained through practicing the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. This is a 'must read' for all those whose lives have been touched by alcoholism.
