John Fahey has made a habit of recording a new album of Christmas music every five or six years, but The New Possibility, which was originally released in 1968, is still his best. On it, Fahey has pulled off the near miraculous feat of taking old holiday chestnuts like "Joy to the World" and "It Came upon a Midnight Clear" and making them sound fresh. When he plays a Travis-picking version of "O Come All Ye Faithful" or he recasts "Silent Night, Holy Night" as bottleneck blues, you get the feeling Fahey is treating the music with respect rather then piety. Also included in this reissue are six tracks from his 1975 release Christmas with John Fahey, Vol. II. The songs feature some nice duets with Rick Ruskin, but the arrangements lack some of the quirkiness that made The New Possibility sound unique. This isn't Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas," but it is a modern holiday classic nonetheless. --Michael Simmons

I've been listening to Fahey for many years. When I'd destroyed the disk, The New Possibility (dropped it on the player when I wanted to play the disk -- old arthritic paws not as reliable as they used to be) I was most unhappy. Guess about the smile when I sent for a replacement on Friday and had it in my mailbox the following Monday. Much praise for Amazon. I'm collecting a list to order other music from Amazon, including some LPs if they're available through Amazon. . . . and are tucked away in the dark ancient things nobody remembers them any more. . . .

Fantastic Christmas album. A song was cut from the second album though.

Fantasy is a bit cheap, and being so cheap, in multiple instances, they have cut off tracks from the albums they try to squish on one CD. I did not know this. But lo and behold Christmas Fantasy Pat I is completely absent on here, and Christmas Fantasy Part II is the last track on the album. Luckily, it was not a song most will care about, and Part II is an epic 12 minute song.

Vol. II really isn't even close to the main album here, which is probably why they just included it as extra tracks.

As is the album is a reissue mastered in 1993. It sounds pretty good all told, but I just wanted to make sure people realize the second album has been cut, and it's not the first time they have cut a Fahey album for CD. America also had a cut to it, but I guess those decisions have to be made. I would have rather had two discs, but I guess profits are not that great. The New Possibility is five stars. Highly recommended for that one.

As a long time John Fahey fan,, I remember being surprised and pleased when this album first came out many years ago, and I got a copy right away, and then another for my father. That old LP still plays well, but having the music on CD is certainly more convenient. And it was a pleasant surprise to find that this copy of the album also contains most of another Fahey Christmas album, so this is a super deal of Christmas music. Hopefully guitar fans will also appreciate the other work of John Fahey and check out some of his other excellent and sometimes strange albums.

I have three other holiday offerings from John Fahey in my collection of holiday music and have enjoyed all of them during the Christmas season. This recording was new to me, even though a couple of the tunes have appeared on the other albums, but great musicians always look for new ways to present the same-old same-old. I played this in the background while working on other projects and also while driving; I enjoy the presentations and the musicianship. Most of the songs are familiar, but there are a few that are new to me. One forgets that other cultures besides our own also celebrate Christmas. If you enjoy excellent guitar playing, you will appreciate this CD.

Christmas at its existential best

I had the great good fortune to see John Fahey live at the Red Herring Coffee House in Urbana, Illinois back around 1975. He said absolutely nothing before, during or after the concert. When I went looking for Christmas music around 1985, I ran into the original cassette of "The New Possibility." It was my family's only Christmas music for years until the tape deck died. In all those years, I heard the album as very downbeat for Christmas.. almost like "Yes, Jesus is born but he is going to get nailed to a cross so don't get too worked up." Now, as an older man, I hear a more hopeful message in the bluesy slide and finger picked tunes. Proof, I guess, that music that is worth listening to can say different things to you at different points in your life.

This is a wonderful album to play at the holidays, offering inventive, warm and energetic arrangements of classics. I loved putting this on in the background in the weeks before Christmas as I went about my day.

This cd in fact contains two christmas albums,one a solo by John Fahey,and the other featuring duets with Richard Ruskin,so incredible value.Firstly,if you are unfamiliar with Fahey take note,the Kings singers or Charlotte Church this is not,these are carols and christmas tunes played by J.F.in his own style,acoustic guitar played so clearly,beautifully and spiritually,he gives new meaning and depth to tunes we've all heard so many times before.The quality of sound on the recordings are excellent too.
Those of you who do know Fahey will understand when I say he takes us on a few of his journeys in his interpretations of these tunes which are wonderful,and in the christmas fantasy tracks the journeys become epic voyages in the style of Yellow Princess,Requia,America,The Voice of the Turtle etc..etc...
So for Fahey converts this cd needs no selling,and those new to this master of the acoustic guitar a wonderful entry into the man's unique musical style.....for Christmas or any time.
