The New Quislings is Bruce Bawer's rebuttal to the mass media that has accused him of complicity in Anders Behring Breivik's rampage. In order to do so, he has to determine whether the charge is true, examine the nature of Breivik's arguments and then examine the media campaign that followed. To accomplish the first two tasks, Bawer does what most members of the media did not do, which is actually read Breivik's manifesto, and then analyze it. He then spends the first part of the book proving, by quoting Breivik, that Breivik was not an admirer of Bawer's, and considered him too liberal and insufficiently tough on Islam, and that Breivik actually acted counter to the ideologies of the many people that he superficially cited. He also demonstrates that almost all of the times that his name appears in Breivik's manifesto, it is in quotes by other authors who are referring to his work. These are easily confirmed, but confirming the innocence of conservative pundits is not on the agenda, which brings us to the remainder of the book, in which Bawer analyzes the media campaign. He does this by simply comparing statements made by the targets of the campaign with the accusations of the media. The result is devastating. Bawer demonstrates that the Norwegian press is using the Breivik rampage as an excuse to suppress dissent and demonize its opposition. The media's litany of libels, slanders and vicious personal attacks on those who have written about the threat of the ongoing Jihad is nothing short of astonishing, but is sadly familiar to anyone who has followed the public relations war that the Muslim world is waging on the west. This last brings us to Bawer's use of the term Quisling.Read more ›

On July 21st, 2011, Bruce Bawer was already outcast by many on the Left as a self-evident bigot, more specifically a first-rate "Islamophobe", naturally owing to his persistent sharp criticism of Islam, in particular the expanding role it is playing in Europe. On July 22nd, however, Bawer was transformed from mere outcast into a bona-fide villain and, for many, an actual accomplice to the horrific massacre perpetrated by Anders Breivik. Bawer's crime? Being cited in Breivik's "manifesto" explicating his rationale behind his forthcoming massacre, which ostensibly cited Bawer(and other professional "Islamophobes") roughly two dozen times as inspiration for his monstrous act. Naturally, being branded as an accomplice or at least inspiration to one of the worst criminals of the young century is a very serious charge. More importantly, it is a completely unfounded, nonsensical, and simply outrageous charge, as Bawer clearly argues in this extended essay.

As a preface, it must be stated that--it's embarrassing that one would even need to point this out--Bawer(as well as other "Islam in Europe" authors such as Bat Ye'or, Christopher Caldwell, and Melanie Phillips) has never advocated or even vaguely implied that violence is the solution to curtailing the rise of Islamism in Europe. On the contrary, these authors are often careful to point out that by far the greatest victims of Islamic theology are MUSLIMS THEMSELVES.

So even though he was cited in Breivik's manifesto(along with, Bawer shrewdly points out, other notorious villains of history such as Thomas Jefferson, George Orwell, and Charles Darwin), where exactly, in the eyes of the Left, does Bawer's culpability lie?

Thrilling, especially the part about Norwegian society
A very interesting book that among other things is offering an alternative view on what is going on in Norwegian society
It is not easy at all to get you views through in the Norwegian media, a strive for a narrow-minded conformity blocks all alternative opinions
It is refreshing to read his book in that context
Sometimes a bit over the top, other times too obviously defensive, but great fun

Today as I am writing this Swedish PM Stefan Löfven just used the Breivik attack again. In responding to yet another attack in Belgium by Islamic radicals. He stated "that the biggest terrorist attack we had in Europe ,Breivik was not a Muslim".Read Bawer's other books "While Europe Slept ""Surrender" and "The Victim's Revolution " to see how left wing nuts in Western Europe ,Scandinavia and United States became so hard fast in defending their ideology ,even in the face of massive evidence the ideology has failed.Norway and Denmark are actually coming to terms with the problem much better nowadays.Sweden however is the poster child for the idiotic international left.

A very readable and interesting book, sometimes a little repetitive and probably missing some complex issues in Nowegian society. This book should definitely be read, but perhaps in combination with other relevant works.
