Author condemns American policies in Afghanistan,Iraq which he terms nothing but genocide.War on Iraq was motivated American greed to control that country fabulous oil weath.Similiarly author says Anglo-American attack on Afghanistan was prompted by desire to establish a foothold in resource-rich Central Asia.War on terrorism along with attempts to nab Al-qaeda supremo Osama Bin Laden has served to veil the above agenda.
Pilger exposes American hypocrisy on so-called 'War on Terror'.In the aftermath of Sep 2001 bombings efforts to bring Osama to justice without resorting to violence was sabotaged .Taliban was willing to extradite Osama to Pak city Peshawar to face trial. But President Musharraf yeilding to Washington's pressure vetoed this proposal.
Further author challenges popular view that Washington's support to Islamic fundamentalist groups was in response to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.USA sought to destabilise Barbarak Karmal's PDPA regime because its revolutionary policies became a role model for other coutries to follow.Soviet decision to intervene in Afghanistan stemmed from Moscow's aim of preventing religious fundamentalism unleashed at its backyard.
Author is equally critical of his native country because of brutal ,inhumane treatment towards indigenous aboriginal peoples.Australia 's human rights trackrecord is vey deplorable;Canberra's glamorous and charming exterior has managed to mask this.
To conclude the book offers the readers to gain a different perspective of 'War on Terror'
Pilger looks at all these places and more and the poor reader is muddied as they get pulled into a story that many of us know but probably have not stitched together as tightly as Pilger gives us. "The New Rulers of the World" is a small book of only 207 pages in the hardback version and those are small pages so the reading will not take long-the digestion, however, will take considerably longer.
As someone who has lived outside the States for some thirty years I know the difficulty of coming to grips with the monstrous nature of the country that I was born in and lived in for my early, formidable years but I also know the truth of what Pilger, himself an Australian, sees in this botched civilization that is now the world's only superpower.
The picture the reader is left with after reading this book is one of a people in denial-denial that the America of their childhood, the America of Iwo Jima, Normandy, Ellis Island, Cherry Trees and myriads of other photo ops and sound bites could be anything but loved and honoured by the world's tied, poor and hungary. Those that know the fiction just keep pumpping out the lies; keeping those people wrapped in their ignorance and thereby keeping the reigns of control firmly in their hands.
...
Others have called this mandatory. I prefer to call it compulsory as every reader will be unable to put it down by the time one has reached page three.
History is usually written by the winners of war and the wealthy countries. The Media has become so commercially pressured and governments so controlled by the desire for money and power that the Western Hemisphere has changed very little since the 15th Century. When you read what Britain, the US, and Australia has done just to Indonesia, a country few of us were told about in school, you will be astounded and insensed.
Read this book.
The book's 2002 publication was a timely one as well, for war against Iraq is now certain and for reasons which should be known to those who have read Pilger's book.
The bad, if that's what you want to call it: inconclusive final chapter that draws few corollaries to earlier chapters.
Overall highly recommended for anyone looking for enlightenment.

John Pilger is a first rate journalist who you can rely on to tell the truth as it is because he checks the facts before reporting it mostly on first hand experience. Waken up everyone and read this book!
Others have covered the subject matter quite well, so there's no point in my rehashing it. The main thing to know is that what Pilger has uncovered is shocking and horrifying. Be prepared to acknowledge that your view of the world was far from reality - even if you'd thought you were a progressive and aware of what first world nations have done and are doing.
This is THE book to tell people to read if they want to believe that their country (US, UK, any other first-world nation) is a good guy, that their actions are based on doing what's right for people around the world.
Just tell them to read this book, and tell 'em that they have no idea what they're saying until they have. That goes for conservatives and liberals. If the liberals and progressives can still say that supporting their party (Democrat, Labour, SNP, Liberal Democrat) makes sense, then you know they haven't actually read it.
This could be obviously considered extreme leftism but could also be simply read in the shoes of a simple human citizen of the world.
The problem with these books is that they cherry pick some of the worse examples. By choosing the worse examples, one can get really dark picture of our societies. But I see Pilger point to take the worst examples to create a shock effect which would have a higher impact on us readers. I consequently find his book too Manichean, too simplified between the bad and the good guys. It seems you have no one between which is in fact the reality.
One issue I have with his style is that he quotes many people and sometimes he is telling the story of a guy who told him a story, etc.. and you end up getting lost. Because he quotes a lot, you end up loosing track of who is the good guy and who is the bad one.
I liked the author’s idea of a victim, an aggressor and a bystander. This book made me think a bit on us westerners impact on the third world. By simply buying an Ipad, you may endanger the health of a worker thousand of kilometres away? Our
How do these things happen? Our societies have developed in such a way and media hypocrisy that our governments are doing horrible things for the benefit of an entire nation. The citizen is left with a feeling of impuissance and most will just hide and claim they are only bystanders and not guilty.
