It's been something like six years since I bought my first copy of The New Rules of Marketing and PR and I knew it was time for an update. There are very few books that stand as a reference on my bookshelf (yeah, a hard copy), and this is one of them!

The fifth edition of The New Rules of Marketing and PR is a gem. David covers all the things I expected to be updated including new social platforms like Periscope. There are new case studies designed to help everyone from executives to interns get a clear and compelling understanding of the digital universe and how they can put it to work for their organization. Marketing and PR professionals will find this new version as refreshingly insightful and useful as the last. The book's delicate balance between strategic insight, tactical execution, and masterful storytelling keep it hype-free and simple - which anyone can appreciate.

In short, there aren't many books I recommend you own a physical copy of (as opposed to an electronic edition) but this is one of them. You'll find yourself referencing it for the next year (or at least until David Meerman Scott releases the 6th edition.)

Thanks, David, for updating one of the most useful books for the modern era of marketing!

Tired of social media platitudes and want some ideas you can use READ THIS BOOK. David has tons of real life examples on how social media works for business, consumer, non profit and more: where it works, how it works and how it can work for YOU.

I now have all five editions of this book and like the first four, this one will soon be filled with my post-it flags, sidebar notes and the "action list" I create for myself while reading.

Don't just get it- use it!

I admit it. I'm a David Meerman Scott fan. I've read all of his books and every edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR. This new 5th edition brings new examples, new social media tools like Periscope, and ways to integrate marketing with sales.

I've used many of David's techniques in my own business--using my blog to expand my thought-leadership presence, using Twitter to bring more people to my blog posts. And my own book started one blog post at a time, using the "new rules" to get customer feedback and real-life stories to hone the content.

I think of The New Rules of Marketing and PR as "agile marketing." We all want to be more nimble and more in-touch with our markets. David shows you how!

"Before the Web came along, there were only three ways to get noticed: buy expensive advertising, beg the mainstream media to tell your story for you, or hire a huge sales staff to bug people one at a time about your products." -- says David Meerman Scott in the introduction to "The New Rules of Marketing and PR." This book is an excellent overview of web marketing principles. I recommend this text to anyone who wants to become a better web marketer.

The New Rules became a best seller through online marketing. After a successful career in PR, Scott created a blog, gave away 250,000 ebooks, and mailed advance copies of his printed books to prominent bloggers. The old way of launching a book would have been exclusively through sales, press releases, advertising and a book tour. Early on Scott describes how the old ways are becoming increasingly inefficient, ineffective, and often insulting.

Scott's essential message is that you can now bypass the traditional marketing channels and reach out directly to customers, provided you have a worthwhile offering and message. To do this, you must philosophically move from monologue to dialog and from propaganda to participation. These necessary changes in marketing approach are the result of the Internet's expansion of communication channels from one-to-many . . . to many-to-one . . . to many-to-many . . . to one-to-one. These four communication modalities combined with the ability to bypass land-based distribution channels and transact commerce online represents a sea change in marketing.

Scott recommends that contemporary marketers think like a publisher. "Publishers consider all the following questions: Who are my readers? How do I reach them? What are their motivations?

The web and especially the social media platforms have made the playing field for marketing communication much more even. It is no longer only the budget that is the deciding factor for how much reach you can create with your content. However, it takes a certain level of insight to really take advantage of the new playing fields and this insight is what David Meermans Scott is giving us through his 5th edition of his ground breaking book "The New Rules of Marketing and PR". The book gives the reader a good overview over the principles behind effective communication on the web and an easy-to-read walk through all the various channels available.
