I cannot believe how much content the creators of this show fit into less than thirty minutes. The show spends most of the time teaching about the customs of Rosh Hashanah, such as the importance of saying "I'm sorry," the tradition of sending cards to friends and family, the significance of eating apples and honey, and the practice of finding ways to make oneself a better person during the following year.

The show includes skits with the Count, Abby, and other Sesame Street characters. Kids always laugh when Abby's hand that has honey on it gets stuck to the shofar. It features "one" as the number of the day and shows kids one dog, one baby, one fire truck, among other objects. At the end of the end of the video, we see young kids speak about the beauty of Yom Kippur, a wonderful way to describe and otherwise solemn holiday. I gave this DVD five stars because the music in it is exceptional. I loved the Sesame Street characters' rock song about Rosh Hashanah and beginning preschool.

Our kids love Shalom Sesame. It isn't overrun with too much information that the kids feel like it's a teaching DVD but it does have enough to expose them to new words and Jewish concepts. Not for the well versed children but good for beginning teaching tools and the characters and actors are great.

Just in time for the Jewish New Year - Rosh Hashanah comes another volume in 12 episode series produced in 2010 episode of Shalom Sesame - the TV series produced in the US by Sesame Workshop and aimed at teaching American Jewish children about Jewish customs and the country of Israel. The show is formatted like the original PBS version (there are other SS versions around the world but this one is US based) with a general storyline for each episode but always a section on numbers and counting and the infamous "Letter of the day" commercials. Each segment is only 2 minutes long so children don't get bored. I reviewed the Passover volume ("It's Passover Grover") earlier this year and this one is just as well done - with some neat bonuses.

The plot this time has to do with some honey - a tradition for the Jewish New Year - getting stuck to the Shofar (the Ram's horn - but oddly this is never explained) so it can't be used. It's all an "accident" and an apology makes it better. The theme throughout other segments is "forgiveness when an apology is offered. There are Israeli named muppets but Grover is still Grover!

There are small segments where real children - not actors - talk about the holiday.
Most episodes of SS include a well-known actor or personality. Here it is news anchor Ann Curry, with a comment of 15 seconds or less..

Kids will enjoy the show but the highlight for parents - and the reason they will sit trough this show multiple times with their kids are the WONDERFUL and HILARIOUS parodies. This time it's a parody of Disney's "High School Musical" - titled "Pre-School Musical"! And that is not the only fun musical moment. There's pop number called "Rosh Hashanah Hannah" featuring a Hannah Montana/ Madonna- like muppet.

We love these DVDs! We had gone to a promotional event at our local Jewish Community Center and saw one episode and loved it. They are perfect for Jews of any denomination. I love that my children are learning about Israel, holidays and Hebrew from the makers of Sesame Street and with the great characters from it! I would recommend for any Jewish family!
